See much of the word need batted around. Think it comes down to want. Lived in NYC for long enough time to know I didn't need a car. Income could have provided for one or more. Didn't need however.

Cars are freedom for many. Provides some way of way to escape. Pandemic data seems to support such. Ask any teenager. Do they need the car? Not so much. Want. Yes.

I’m not advocating for sprawl and strip malls past the horizon but rural living is a consideration to make.

Ok.... more nicer cities or fewer people.

What's the disconnect here? If population rises you can either increase population density (more cities) or increase the area that people live (urban sprawl). If more people live in rural areas they aren't really rural anymore... The Earth is a planet not a Tardis.
