Hey, guess what!
My temporary tag got expired 3 days ago. HAHA.

Tesla made a mistake not putting my down payment check into the account so it did not go through DMV. They told me this yesterday. So I re-wrote a check, and drove 20 min to the store.

I'm now driving expired car, feel very embarrassing.

the car is great but the service is not. This should not be a problem at Honda/Toyota/or any other vehicle dealerships.

Short answer: yes I have, and no it did not have the title.

When I bought my car I was told Tesla would register it. Then I received a FedEx with a letter and a few papers stating that I would have to register it. The DMV form they included was wrong, which I told them at the time of delivery and they said they'd fix but obviously did not. But that's no issue because that form is ONLY necessary if someone else registers the car, but now that I have to do it the form is pointless. I learned through emails with Tesla reps that they called my letter a 'self-registration packet' although the rep thought they were still doing the registration themselves and claimed the letter was mailed to the DMV (one of many ignorant Tesla employees I have encountered).

Now they are saying they can't give me a new temporary permit while I continue to wait for the title. They are clinging to the statement "With the documents you already have, you should have no problems being registered" despite the DMV website which clearly states I need the title to register a car that was purchased out of state (unless it was purchased with a loan or is on lease, in which case I would need those documents). I am going to the DMV this Friday to see if they'll register it without the title. Perhaps the DMV website is wrong, and these Tesla reps are right, but I doubt it.

I hope it works out for you but I doubt they'll be able to register it without a title. I can't believe how terrible Tesla's car sales team is. It's sad. I asked the delivery agent today if he could confirm whether or not my self-registration packet has been mailed out and he said there was no way to tell. I also asked if the self-registration packet comes with the title and he said "it should"...

"There's no way to tell" lol - mine was sent FedEx so it had a tracking number. Pretty sure there IS a way to tell and that rep simply didn't know how. I think Tesla is kind of like a lot of other big companies where half of their customer service reps simply don't know what they're talking about so if you just keep calling or emailing the main contacts, eventually you will get someone helpful.

Thank you! I will update after I visit the DMV. I'm hoping at least the DMV can give me a temporary registration.

Honestly, the part that bothers me most is the insistence that my worries about not being able to register my car are unfounded. It's just so infantilizing. And it's part of this trend with how I feel that Tesla has broken promises and has treated me as 'less-than.'

Please, please explain to me why anyone would believe anything a car salesperson tells them??? You must be young? Us old folks (75) know care salesman are like Army recruiters.
I have read a hundred post about this, and it has only gotten worse since i have been an owner.
My SA in West Palm was rude , lude and obscene. I couldn't even look at car till after i had paid for it. Period.
He would not guarantee the condition of the car. I have bought new BMW, BENZ, Corvettes, all after test drives.
I ended up buying mine from a Benz dealer in Atlanta. They were great, they picked me up at airport, test drove it, i paid cash which helped a lot. They gave me 30 day tags. And all the paperwork to take with me to give dmv here.
Good luck .

Apparently tesla uses a third party company to do the registrations.

My registration and title were delayed too. In fact, they fedexed me plates and registration the day my temp tags expired. This is in NJ.

Title (I paid cash, so no lien) did not come to me until I began sending emails.

My update: tried to register the car and was told I can't because I don't have the title. So I was right, every single Tesla person I spoke to about this (about 4 different people) were wrong.

It was our delivery specialist who said Tesla would register the car. They had us fill out forms and a notary notarized the forms. There was no reason to think they were lying about planning to do the registration. Furthermore, the Tesla website explains that Tesla will handle the registration if your state allows Tesla to do direct sales, which Nevada does though a special exception made just for Tesla.

I think they just changed their minds because they were too busy, wanted to save some money on the registration fees, the form was wrong and they didn't want to fix it, or they felt like it was too complicated to deal with something outside California. It's actually a very simple process if you can be bothered to read the Nevada DMV website. The NV DMV website contains accurate reliable information, UNLIKE the Tesla website.

I wish I had had the option to have the car delivered to my local sales office but I bought it during the period of time when you had to get your CPO where-ever it was located. Now, I understand that you can get it delivered for a $2k fee. The fee is steep (CarMax is often free for that distance, longer distances are up to about $700) but it would have been worth it to save money on taxes and to save all this hassle.

I still love the car... but man, I kind of hate the company.

Sorry to hear that but yeah, we figured that would happen. I’m not sure what world Tesla lives in where you can register a vehicle without a title. That’s never been the case in the several states I’ve lived in.

Have you tried getting an extension to your temporary tags? A Tesla support agent told me I could just stop by the service center and get my temporary tags extended if I get close to the expiration date and haven’t received the self-registration packet. I know you received that packet but it obviously didn’t contain what you needed.

As a side question, is your temporary tag just a small red sheet attached to your front windshield that says something like a temporary moving permit?

Tesla said they could not extend my temporary permit.

The DMV gave me 2 weeks.

Both tags were just a piece of paper that was taped onto the passenger side bottom of the windshield with a Tesla logo sticker. The one from CA was 90 days and it was tiny and said something like "Temporary Registration" and the NV is for 14 days and is larger and says "Moving Permit". The CA one had not expired... but in NV you only have 30 days to register your car. The NV law is that you can use any other state's temp registration/moving permit but only up to 30 days and then you have to get a NV registration.

So an update on my status. I have been emailing the Inside Delivery Advisor I've been working with and today I was notified (after inquiring about it) that the self-registration packet and new temporary tags would arrive tomorrow. I started asking about this l last week since my temporary tags expire tomorrow night and I still need to have the title sent to a different state to be registered. I asked for a tracking number so I could keep an eye on it and unfortunately, it was being delivered to the wrong state. I realize there's probably some confusion but I've made it very clear from the beginning that I'm registering the car in a different state than where I'm physically located, and was told the self-registration packet would be mailed to my physical address. I asked about this about three different times because I had a feeling this could easily get screwed up and sure enough, it did. Funny part is the package was picked up about 3 minutes (according to FedEx) after I sent the email saying it's going to the wrong address. Anyways, the Inside Delivery Advisor said they were able to resolve the issue and it would be mailed to the correct address and arrive on Saturday. We'll see...

So again, make sure you triple check/confirm everything. As people always say, "trust but verify", it's more like "whatever you expect can go wrong, probably will go wrong, so verify everything several times". At least that's been my experience thus far with Tesla.

Great car though.

It’s Sunday now and I still don’t have new temp tags. Mine expired yesterday so now the car will sit in the garage until I get the new temp tags. Pretty frustrating having just bought this car and now I can’t drive it because of Tesla’s incompetence. I started asking about this over a week ago because I had a feeling it would be an issue, but apparently I should have started requesting new temporary tags as soon as I took delivery of the vehicle.

To continue on from my post above - I assumed when I was told they have resolved the issue of sending it to the wrong address that they were able to contact FedEx and have the package sent to the correct address since it had just been picked up. I kept an eye on the tracking number and it still went to the wrong address. I let the Inside Delivery Agent know it was still going to the wrong address to which I’m told they sent a new self-registration packet and temp tags that would arrive here on Saturday (yesterday). I then asked how is this possible since I’m assuming a self-registration packet includes the title since that’s required to register the vehicle. The response I got was that there was some confusion and actually they’ve only sending me new temp tags and the self-registration packet hasn’t gone out yet.

I’m going to predict that when I finally do get the self-registration packet, that it’s not going to have the title. I’ve asked if the self-registration packet includes the title four times now and have not received a response, the question seems to always be ignored.

So I finally got the new temporary tags. It's basically a sheet of paper with my VIN and address from the CA DMV that says it's good for 90 days or until I get my plates, whichever occurs first. I don't live in CA so I'm not sure how that works with the rules here which I believe you're supposed to register within 30 days of getting the vehicle. The one I had before was a moving permit from my state for 14 days.

They also sent me some paperwork to sign and send back. It looks like paperwork that should have been signed before delivery, a Report of Sale and Statement of Delivery Outside California. I signed the documents and created a cover letter reminding them to send me the self-registration and title to my physical/mailing address and not the address where I'm registering the car (since this has already been messed up despite me telling them about this four times).

I suppose at this point it's just a matter of waiting for the self-registration and title. I did get a confirmation from the Inside Delivery Agent that they're waiting on the title and it would be sent with the self-registration packet, so hopefully that is the case.
