Dashcam and collision warning

Hello all - recently I had an incident when my dashcam despite being in “auto” mode failed to record the event nor I had collision warning which we never came up. This happened on a mini roundabout when the 3rd party didn’t give way and hit my front passenger side. Any thoughts ?

I have a Model Y and Tesla support have been useless pretty much giving the same generic and frustrating response to check auto mode, save videos and check USB drive for any missing video on the display and I have done all these.

Unfortunately auto doesn’t = save clips of what you want it to.
Always hit the save button, or honk if you’ve activated the save on honk setting, or pull the USB drive and manually grab the clip before it gets overwritten.
Thanks, will check “Save on honk” setting. Hitting the save button at that instant will work only if the dash cam had recorded it, isn’t it ?

If your USB stick/drive is working, the camera is always recording while driving. Check that you have the small red circle in the corner of the camera icon, not a red cross. The constant recording only keeps the most recent one hour of video. If you manually save a clip by either pressing the camera button or honking, it will save the last 10 minutes (I think it's 10) into a separate folder named with the current date and time. Anything not manually saved will be overwritten after an hour.

It’s always recording, but it overwrites recorded footage after about an hour so you need to press save. It occasionally has a glitch and may miss a few seconds of a video here and there, but other than that it’s pretty reliable if you hit save to keep the last few minutes of footage.

Just got my new model s after an accident. want my dash cam to record continuously, but note this may not be possible. My question is, if I honk does the "10 minute" saving of the incident begin befor the honk or does it start with the honk.

My M3 manual states:

  • On Honk: When you press the horn, Dashcam saves a recording of the most recent ten minutes of footage. You can enable this along with Auto or Manual simultaneously.

Auto mode should record if airbags went off. Otherwise it’s not deemed a recordable incident.

I believe the issue is still there, but when you press dashcam record or honk, there will be a brief period where dash cam will have skipped the event. This often results in the actual event being missed. So press record several seconds, or longer, after the event.

Easy enough to test. Drive along and when you reach an easily identifiable feature, such as a zebra crossing, hit record. Then play back the sequence and see if it recorded the zebra crossing.

I'm not trying to be sarcastic or anything but get a proper dashcam. Of course this advice is a bit late for this instance, but you might meet another idiot tomorrow, and having decent footage is crucial.

Don't cheap out either and don't cheap out on the memory card. Avoid Nextbase.

The Tesla cameras are very poor quality in comparison to a decent Vantrue or Viofo unit. A couple of times I've been able to make out a plate on the Tesla footage where the main camera missed it, but that's was just due to luck of the repeater cameras positioning rather than a quality thing in the Tesla's favor.

The Tesla cannot compete. And, as you've seen, sometimes doesn't even record at all.

I strongly suggest not setting, save on honk. Most people honk before being hit which would result in the accident not being recorded.

As others have suggested, auto only saves in an airbag deployment.

A better option is to have the dash cam app on the quick access bar, tapping it whilst driving will record the last 10 minutes. Alternatively, if you want to save a slot on the quick access bar for something else, you can set the left scroll wheel to save footage by long holding it.
