Discounted Model 3s

it appears there’s excess inventory of RWD Model 3s. 1 year of Supercharging is now being offered for inventory cars to help move them. What happens to the cars built in 2018 when 2019 begins? They become one year old cars and one year old cars get discounted to help get rid of them. I think it was said; Teslas will never be discounted. I can’t see someone buying a “new” 2018 M3 in 2019 without a discount.

Thoughts?
Telsa doesn't have model years. There are no 2018 Model 3 models.
Even regular cars don't change when the years do, So my 2018 Leaf that I got in February will still be the current model until the new version comes out sometime in the future.

AWD sells itself and is backlogged. Tesla economist was boneheaded and made it only 4K cheaper so they have hundreds of thousands of those waiting to get built.

When it was released AWD was $5K more.

Customers complained because Elon promised it would be less than $5K so Tesla lowered it to $4K

Some point later Tesla adjusted it back to $5K.

Now it's $6K

To my knowledge we don't know what the backlog of the AWD is, and I don't know how many people ordered it over the RWD because of the $4K difference. There is also the pending reduction of the federal tax rebate which technically makes the AWD a lot more if you don't get it by the end of the year. So near the end of the year the RWD might be really attractive due to the actual price differential.

The $6K price differential is probably pretty well set I think. It's a half second faster, and you get AWD. It's a little heavier and the range is a bit less (310 versus 340 if you ignore Tesla's gaming of the EPA numbers).

FWIW, years (model years?) are listed at New & Used Electric Cars | Tesla.

You have to pick a model year at Compare Side-by-Side.

The certifications for Teslas (click on the links on the rightmost column) at Eligible Vehicles - Single Occupant Carpool Lane Use Stickers do list model years. Examples: https://ww3.arb.ca.gov/msprog/onroad/cert/pcldtmdv/2018/tesla_pc_a3740022_0_z_e.pdf and https://ww3.arb.ca.gov/msprog/onroad/cert/pcldtmdv/2017/tesla_pc_a3740018_0_z_e.pdf.

Tesla on their own site has used the words model year. Example: Model S Safety Update. Google for site:tesla.com "model year" -site:forums.tesla.com model s.

Tesla uses Model years where they are needed as a placeholder.

Other manufactures uses Model years to group together generations. Tesla uses “Model years” to designate year of manufacturer.

A 2016 Model X can be an AP1 car.. or an AP2 car. Drastic difference.

Tesla’s are about features, not years.

I found my 2015 Model S 70D on there.

They want $57,600 for it, and I sold it to them for $44K.

Ouch.

I should have sold it privately. Zoom only offered me $48K, and that wasn't enough to lose out on the sales tax reduction.

You downgraded? Why didn’t you keep the model s?

I got the P3D+ so it's basically a side grade all things considered.

When I got the S my plan was to always get the 3 as the S was expensive/large/etc. I just didn't expect to love the S so much. I got used to the size, and the silky smooth feel of it.

I'll miss lots of things about it like dual nav screens, heated steering wheel (I have cold hands), the seats.

But, the new one is much quicker and is small/nimble. It's the size of a car that I'm more at home in.

It also has more range, and I won't have to supercharge as much.
