GBT Chademo. The global standard

The new joint charging standard is called HPC. It is designed to be capable of up to 900kW !

While the physical plug is different than CHAdeMO (Japan) or GB/T (China), vehicles with those plugs will be reverse compatible with an adaptor (similar to the Tesla to CHAdeMO adaptor).

The German designed CCS is frequently claimed by CCS advocates as “taking over the world”, but the reality is that the world is not likely to have any single charge protocol, any more than we have one type of liquid fuel.

CCS is still in last place of all the world standards, but it’s looking like it will eventually prevail in Europe, plus an odd smattering of a few other countries. Oddly enough, South Korea is one of those countries that was convinced by General Motors (GM) to adopt SAE-CCS-Combo1. Quite literally an island surround by Japan and China charge protocols. Australia and New Zealand will certainly adopt a German / European CCS protocol.

The Volkswagen diesel scandal settlement with EPA and CARB requires that they install CHAdeMO in the USA, in addition to their own VW supported CCS (via VW owned Electrify America). As of August 2018, they are clearly intent on pulling a lot of BS to favor CCS, like offering 7 chargers that are CCS-only at 100-350kW, and only one CHAdeMO plug, restricted to 50kW.

CHAdeMO still leads the world. As of August 2018, there are the following numbers of chargers:

18,030 CHAdeMO worldwide

6,260 Europe (CHAdeMO is one of two OFFICIAL protocols in the European Union). Even with German auto makers and German politicians pulling several stunts to restrict competition, and favor CCS (going as far as attempting to outlaw competitors like Tesla and Nissan)), they haven’t been very successful.

2,320 USA

2,020 Asia

7,250 Japan

180 Other

CHAdeMO is the only DC charging protocol with a common plug worldwide. CCS uses different regional plugs between Europe / Australia / New Zealand and USA / Canada / South Korea

CCS is not present in large markets like Japan and China. GB/T Is restricted to China only. HPC will likely prevail throughout the East.
