How can one tell if this is present or not in the vehicle, other than it just sounding better?

Subwoofer box in the hatch area on the passenger side is about the easiest visual way.

car info screen on the MCU should also report it-

Yes you can also check on the main screen under Software -> Additional Vehicle Info -> Audio System
