Model S is expecting to start delivery at HK around late June. Currently ordered between 500-600.

There are huge demand for Model S at HK, price is similar to BMW 5 or Benz E class here. Affordable for most middle class.

I thought Hk has around 180% importtax on ICE cars, vs. 0% importtax for EVs, how can the Model S have the same price as an BMW 5.
I thougt its around the Ford Focus level.

ck1116, I know there are some countries where the large size of the car could create issues with narrow streets and/or small assigned parking in apartment buildings. are there any such issues in HK?

Both BMW 5 series and Tesla Model S priced from HK$ 600,000 or above. But Model S is in fact much better in many aspects; so if prospect drivers tested both cars, they are very likely to choose Model S.

I have test drive Model S, and it feels like drive BMW 5 more than Benz S class. In specification, it maybe a little wider than Benz S, but Tesla feels smaller when looking and driving.

And as so many Benz S class around and without problems for most car parks and streets, it won't be a problem for Tesla S too.

I believe demand of Model S in HK may similar to Norway; if Tesla can supply enough.

ck1116:

What's the annual sales number for BMW 5/7 and Benz E/S in Hongkong? Is home charging an issue for the affordable buyers, i.e. do they usually own dedicated parking space?

Thanks

If I remember correctly, BMW 5/7 + BENZ E/S sold over 5000 last year.
S400 from HK$ 1.5 million, S500 is about HK$ 2 million, average car park less thank HK$ 0.5 million.
Buy P85+ plus a car park should be similar with Benz S. But remember car park price normally go up in long term; S class depreciation is super fast.

WoW, good point. Thanks for the feedback.

Btw, I think Hong Kong market should be more successful than Beijing/Shanghai for below reasons:
1. higher income level
2. restricted driving range, so no range anxiety at all
3. much cheaper or more competitive pricing due to import tax exemption for EV

500-600 is confirmed order, from a Tesla representative.

Didn't Tesla have 300 or so orders in July of 2013? I would expect a much larger backlog by now. Where did you get the 500-600 number? Store representative?

According to their representative, they will talk to our house management offices to arrange installation; estimate cost a few thousand HKD, so should be US$ 500-1000 only, each parking space will has individual electric meter. and estimate electricity cost only HK$ 0.2/km, maximum 0.3/km. My ML350 is HK$ 2.x/km.

I really think the _only_ thing holding back Hong Kong now is charging at home/office. If everyone could easily install a wall connector on-demand, then Tesla (and other EVs) would soar here.

thanks ck, hadn't realized HK had this kind of potential.
