How is this spring break itinerary? SF,LA,Vegas, Palm Springs

Planning a road trip for our family of 5 and wanted to see what people thought of this spring break itinerary in a 60kWh Model S.

Particularly interested if anyone has any comments on hotel choices in San Luis Obispo, LA Area or Palm Springs. Given that a range charge in my 60kWH is about 240 miles, will I have any problems driving 70mph with a family of 5 on board and AC running? Looks like my max distance is the 156 miles between Barstow and Vegas.

Friday Night:
Home to Gilroy Supercharger (about an hour away). Top off and then to San Luis Obispo (156 miles)
San Luis Obispo: Embassy Suites, next to a J-1772 charger at the mall

Saturday:
Embassy Suites to UCSB (95 miles)
Top off at UCSB and take a campus tour for my entering prospective Freshman

UCSB to Hawthorne Supercharger (110 miles)
Might stay in LA/Santa Monica area Saturday night or continue to Vegas

Hawthorne Supercharger to Barstow Supercharger (120 miles)
Barstow Supercharger to Mandalay Shops (156 miles)
Stay at the Four Seasons Las Vegas for a few nights

Wednesday:
Las Vegas to Barstow (156 miles)
Barstow to Palm Springs--Hyatt Indian Wells (123 miles)

Friday:
Hyatt to Santa Monica (138 miles)

Sunday:
Back to Bay Area on I-5 via Tejon Ranch, Harris Ranch and Gilroy

There was a good recommendation for a hotel with NEMA 14-50 in Pasa Robles, close to SLO.

I hope the Harris Ranch SC expansion is done when you go, otherwise I can envision at traffic jam at the current lone charger on a Sunday. You should call Tesla to check on that.

Whenever we're in the LA area, we try to get to one of the 85C Bakeries for amazing treats. 85C Bakery Cafe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia You could probably bring a couple days worth of breakfast with you to LV. Try their seasalt coffee!

I was in SB earlier this year, and as mentioned on another thread, the Rabobank in Goleta (Recargo app can show you the location) is a free Tesla 70A J1772 charger you can use for a quick boost. It's not too far from UCSB I think.

I don't have twin chargers so 70A won't help me much. I think they have chargers on UCSB campus and we can tour around the campus for 2-3 hours while the car gets a boost. What will I get from a 30A charger? 22 miles per hour?

if it is a 208V 30A I get 6.2 kW / Hr which is probably 19-21 mi/hr for faster driving

Thanks for the tip. We'll try to swing by 85C. I'm always up for good coffee.

I'm also going to try to make a stop at Ding Tai Fung in Arcadia for good Taiwanese dumplings. Can't be as good as Taipei but I'll give them a shot.

156 miles in a S60 is a stretch. I wouldn't plan to go that far without a "plan B" charging location identified in advance. I would also recommend regular monitoring of your estimated range with the energy app and slowing down as needed to make sure you make it with enough room left for unexpected detours, hills, weather, and such. I'm not saying you can't make it, but I am saying that it's close enough to warrant extra care.

@smd, thanks for the tip about the hotel. We often spend the night halfway, even in the gasser, so that hotel sounds great that they can reserve the spot for you. I worry a lot about the Rabobank chargers being in use by another car when I need it.

There are free chargers in the Mandalay Shops parking lot. Supposedly at the Shops Valet area between Luxor and Mandalay Bay. The Four Seasons is actually the top floors of the Mandalay Bay but has it's own lobby, pool, etc. Guests can still access Mandalay Bay facilities so the wave pool and lazy river will be great for the kids. With it's own check in, the kids never even have to see the casino floor; not that I'm worried about that sort of thing.

I might opt to stay at the Embassy Suites in San Luis Obispo since it's a bit farther south. I'll have more range the next day and the SLO stop is really just to recharge the car (and the humans) on the way to Santa Barbara. Also, I like the fact that there are other charge stations nearby in case "Plan B" is needed.

I'll take a careful look at Darmok's drive to Vegas.

Are all of the chargers on UCSB campus 30Amp?

How much energy do you typically expend getting from UCSB to Santa Monica or Hawthorne?

The good news: Spring Break road trip has begun! So far the modeled estimates of energy consumption are spot on! Currently spending the night in San Luis Obispo and getting a free charge at the mall.

The bad news: I could not avoid hitting a box on 101 on the way to Gilroy! There is milld damage to my front bumper and brand new paint armor!!!! Argh!
