Hyundai starts pre-orders for Kona Electric

Hyundai Kona Electric will be available with 39,2 and 64 kWh battery options.

Hyundai Kona

  • Length: 4.165 mm
  • Width: 1.800 mm
  • Height: 1.550 mm
  • Wheelbase: 2.600 mm

Hyundai Kona Electric

  • Length: 4.180 mm (+ 15 mm)
  • Width: 1.800 mm
  • Height: 1.555 mm (+ 5 mm)
  • Wheelbase: 2.600 mm

Let’s add the Chevrolet Bolt EV to the comparison…

Chevrolet Bolt EV

  • Length: 4.170 mm
  • Width: 1.770 mm
  • Height: 1.600 mm
  • Wheelbase: 2.600 mm
When compared to the Chevrolet Bolt EV, the Hyundai Kona Electric has some advantages.

1. It’s a Hyundai, this means that its warranty will be much better (5 years bumper to bumper compared to 2 years for AmperaE).
2. The Kona Electric will be more efficient. It’ll have more recent battery cells (NCM 811), which will make the battery pack at least 150 kg lighter than the one present today in the Bolt EV – with NCM 622 cells. Furthermore, it’ll have a heat pump, especially important in colder places.
3. Being lighter not only makes it more efficient, but will also contribute for better performance (faster acceleration) and increased safety (less stopping distance).
4. Adaptive cruise control. It’s unbelievable that the Bolt EV has the radars needed for AEB (Autonomous Emergency Braking) and it’s lacking adaptive cruise control…
5. Having a entry-level battery option (39,2 kWh) will make it cheaper.

It sounds pretty much exactly like the Bolt, except with the option of a larger battery pack (who know how much more that will cost).

The real option is a smaller pack (39.2 kWh). The question is how much cheaper.?

The Kona is a lifted Bolt so it looks like a real SUV, but it loses aerodynamic efficiency.

To compensate it gets a 4 kWh bigger battery (from 60 kWh to 64 kWh.) For about $2.5k more.

Hyundai sells about 2k ICE Kona per month in Europe.

Like Outlander PHEV, I think Kona BEV can outsell Kona ICE.

Renault Captur sells about 17k units per month in Europe.

Opel Mokka sells about 14k units per month in Europe.

Can it sell well? If you use the Kona ICE as comparison yes.

If you use segment leaders no.
