1. Tesla could start a car insurance business. Mainly to serve Tesla car owners. At an average of 2 million miles per accident, This business should be very profitable, bring in almost $1B profit in 2020, and doubles the profit every 2 years. I think most Tesla car owners would be willing to give their insurance business to Tesla.

2. Tesla could start a software/online business, make it capital light, deals with billions of customers. It could be games, news, social network, music, learning, or banking, ..., Tesla has so many fans around the world, if planned well, this business can become profitable relatively quickly. If an online business has a lot of users, the ads money alone would be quite significant.

Use the profit from the above businesses to buy back Tesla shares.

Now that Tesla bought the land in Shanghai, they should pour the concrete foundation, then build a tent on 1/4 of the foundation and start to do general assembly of Model S and Model X. They could start producing cars in months instead of 2 years.

Meanwhile continue to build the Gigafactory on the rest of the foundation to build Model 3.

I don't think there will be a demand problem in Q4. In case there is, Elon or someone else can start an EV rental company, buy a lot of Tesla cars, also buy used Model 3s (those sellers would buy Tesla again). The rental business will likely be profitable, also helps to promote Tesla.

To Go where No Man has gone before? Doesn't even need to be "boldly".
Sometimes it's simply a matter of what's next needs to come next...

If it's Musk's goal to have as many people as possible to ditch the fossil-fuel car, it may be time (after 12 years) to bring a lot smaller and therefore lighter EV that does not need that many batteries to score a decent range. Benefits:
1. Can be built cheaper; sales will no longer be dependent on EV tax credits
2. May well lend itself way better to driverless (and mobility-on-demand services)
3. Better utilization of the existing infrastructure; (city) governments will applaud you for it
4. The competition is playing catch up; Tesla investors want to know what's next on the Tesla agenda...

Think of it as a sort of recipe, even blueprint...

During Q3 conference call, Elon just described that Tesla will build tent in Shanghai and start to build Model 3 in 2019. This is a great move! Not only to increase sales (of high margin Model 3s), also the public will have a chance to experience how great the Model 3 is.
