No, it is not required. A Gen 2 Wall Connector can be used on any 240 Volt circuit from 15 Amp up to 80 Amp. A Gen 3 Wall Connector can similarly be used on any 240 Volt circuit from 15 Amp to 60 Amp.
The Gen 2 has a physical set of dip switches or a dial inside to set it to match the circuit it is on. A Gen 3 uses a WiFi setup process via your phone or tablet to tell it what size circuit it is on.
EV charging is considered a continuous load, so you will only get 80% output to keep from overloading your circuit breaker.
