Is it smart to buy FSD for $5k while it’s still available for MX owners?

The most likely scenario is this: they don't know exactly what the new hardware will cost, nor what the market will bear.

The FSD upgrade was $4k (or $5k) if purchased "later" - there was no definition of time, and prices are always subject to change.

Later came and went...

Tesla is making their own chips now.
Maybe upgrades will cost less then they originally projected.

I can tell you from direct experience that making them yourself is more about control than cost.

Also, ask anyone in the business of fabricating electronics what has happened to the cost of commodity materials over the past year.
