Just got my VIN number and delivery appointment. How do I tell of this is an old or new number?

What is the “telling” piece of the VIN number?

I notice it ends in a number in the mid 58,000s range. Otherwise it’s a bunch of letters with a 5 and a 3 mixed in for flavor.

What’s all this then?

Is there a process to making that guess about how long you’re car has been sitting in an inventory lot? 3 weeks, 3 days, 32 seconds? Who cares? Stop geeking out over it? :)

There is a sticker on the driver's door frame that shows the month of manufacture. Other than that, you can't exactly tell when it was manufactured by looking at the VIN because Model 3 VINs are not sequential. However, in your case, July or August 2018 is more likely. If it's RWD, then July is more likely. If AWD then August is more likely.

Here is the VIN range for each month:
04/18 12,600 24,645
05/18 18,755 40,655
06/18 19,434 46,755
07/18 37,070 74,555
08/18 51,265 108,151
09/18 63,295 116,055

Here is a chart I created for this specific topic:

Mine is 103xxx with build date 9/18
My friends is some ridiculous low VIN like 7XXX but his build date is 8/18

The VIN’s seem random.

The VINs are not random but they are intentionally mixed up to obscure the actual day to day production numbers because Elon doesn't like shorts and day traders. To achieve this effect, they leave many VIN ranges unused so they can go back and use them in the future. They don't do this for the S and X. Those are completely sequential.

Intentionally mixed up == random.

I have a VIN 55,000 range and it was essentially perfect except for one tiny paint defect that they took care of, and some curb rash that they took care of. There will always be anecdotal stories of disasters here and there no matter the VIN range, but I think they've worked things out from a quality control point of view.

I guess I will know then, once I get the car and see what’s on the door frame.

The more I read about ahort sellers the more they tick me off... But that’s a whole other topic.

Miles on the car and build date no older than say August (because those should be all gone by now) and you'll be fine.

There are definitely still some outliers being produced. Probably more paint issues than anything.

A) Stop geeking out over it

or

B) Reject the car and wait a few more weeks or months for another.

Interesting. Mine is 49,0xx and is supposedly early August manufacture.
