On the leg from Barstow to Vegas, he says he charged 200+ miles.

I noticed his '200-plus miles' statement when I was viewing the video, and thought: "Oh, no! Here we go again..."

It doesn't take more than one or two experiences like his for even the most obtuse owner to internalize the EV-driver's mantra: "Never pass up a charging opportunity." That's doubly (or quintuple-y) true when the charging opportunity is a Supercharger. A few extra minutes at a supercharger can save you hours at a 30a J1772 later in the trip. If you leave a Supercharger without a full Standard charge (or a full Range charge if you have to go farther than ChadS's 'magic number' of 170 miles with an 85kWh battery), you are guaranteeing yourself some measure of range anxiety before your next charge, as well as a longer time charging at your next, low-power charging opportunity.

To summarize:

1. Never pass up a charging opportunity.
2. The faster the rate of charge, the more conservative you should be in your calculation of how much Rated range you need before you leave.
3. When Superchargers are no more than 150 miles apart no one with an 85kWh battery will worry about how fast they drive or how cold it is outside.

As this reviewer discovered, driving without range anxiety is liberating and gives you a whole different appreciation for the Model S.
