Let the repairs begin

On October 12th a good friend backed her SUV into my M3 while it was parked in her driveway! And before I go any further I'll say that we are still good friends. The front bumper is a mess, the frunk lid is badly bent, and the front left fender looks damaged too. Two days after the accident I took it to a Tesla authorized collision center for an estimate. The preliminary estimate came to just over $8200. But the car drives like it is still new except for cruise control not working. The shop was backed up and said they wouldn't be able to begin work on it until today (11/1). So I took it home and brought it back today. I started this thread so other people can see how long the repairs take and find out about any issues that come up. The guy at the shop said that he's having less problems getting replacement parts for Teslas than he is for most other manufacturers. I hope that remains true. Anyway, this is the beginning of a diary of sorts about the experience.

I ran my 2020 Model 3 over a median on October 22nd. Damage to front and rear wheels and tires, front bumper, suspension and under body stuff. I received an ordered parts list from Tesla on 11/19 and the ONLY things keeping my car from being ready is "LAMP ASY, FASCIA LAMP, SAE UP-LEVEL, RH" and "LAMP ASY, FASCIA LAMP, SAE UP-LEVEL, RH". TWO stinking fog lights. I have an estimated pick up time of November 30th, but if they don't get the fog lights, they just have my car until they do I suppose. I was told that the car would be drivable without the lights, but to put the lights in - they have to break down the whole bumper. repairs are sitting a little over $10K right now. I wouldn't have thought in a million years that a median could be this destructive.

Here's my first update on the original post from 11/1. On Monday, 11/22 I received an email from Tesla that listed all the components the collision center had ordered. As I mentioned in my original post, I left the car with the collision center on 11/1. The form below indicates that the collision center submitted the order to Tesla on 11/11. Yes, it would have been nice if it took less than 7 working days to submit the order, but they did tell me that they were very busy, so I can live with that. But I am wondering why it took from 11/11 (the order date) until 11/22 for Tesla to forward the order info to me, and without any estimated shipping or delivery dates. Again, so be it because there are no other options. Now, I'll be curious to see if Tesla updates me on the shipping of all these parts.

The form itself reminds me a bit of a hospital bill: lots of codes and abbreviations that really don't tell me much of anything. Yes, I do know what a Hood Latch is, but what the hell is "BOLT,5LOBE,M6x19,[109],ZNNI,MAT,PTP,SEAL", and I'm getting 10 of them. A brief layman's description of where these bolts go and what they do would have been nice.

I wrote to the repair shop for an update from their end. My contact there said that they have been receiving parts for other Tesla repairs "within a reasonable amount of time" and that he still hopes to have the work done in "early December". All my fingers are crossed about this, and it's getting hard to type.

Yeah, nobody's in a rush, and the part descriptions are cryptic. Anyway, sounds like a Pentalobe bolt in the M6x19mm size. Maybe they hold the frunk lid?

Wow, that must have been a really hard hit. They're replacing the crash beam, both of the crush cans it's attached to, and servicing the battery!

It's curious that you singled out that one bolt. The description is pretty clear to me: M6 thread, 19mm length, pentalobe head, zinc-nickel plating, sealing flange, and it's no surprise they want to replace them because one-time use bolts are commonplace these days. But as far as I can tell there are only 2 of these on the whole car, not 10. They secure the battery fuse cover under the back seat.

Why are they messing with the battery? Usually it's enough to just unplug the 12V supply to keep the car "off" during service but I'm guessing they want to dig in there and actually pull out the fuse to be sure. I'm sure those bolts are only a few dollars but the approach seems excessive for a repair not involving any HV systems.

I hope I never have to deal with this, but let me just say ... I think it's *awesome* that Tesla now emails owners directly on body shop parts orders and status! That's a solid move on Tesla's part ... there've been enough "we're telling you we're waiting for Tesla but we really haven't even ordered anything yet" cases that it's a self-defense mechanism on Tesla's part.

When I had my big Buick-meets-deer repair 2 years ago, I had absolutely no insight into what was going on with parts. The fact that GM factories were on strike didn't help matters, but I had to check in with the body shop to see what we were waiting on and what the options were. (Turns out, no options - not even refurb parts available ...)

Getting the info "right from the horse's mouth" is amazing.

I have another update on the repairs to my 2020 M3LR. I received an email from Tesla last night at 8:43 Eastern time. I was impressed that someone was compiling this updated parts/shipping list on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. And it looks like most of the parts have shipped to the collision center. Unfortunately, you can see that there are a few parts on order that are still waiting to be shipped. I'll be getting in touch with the customer service rep at the collision center on Monday to send him a copy of my email from Tesla and to see if he has any further info on the parts still waiting to be shipped.

A new front left hand fender is due to arrive today, but there is still no word from Tesla on when the HOOD LATCH (Item #1 on the list) and the PLUG (Item #21 on the list) are going to ship. I received a third update on the shipment of parts from Tesla to the collision center where my car is being fixed. To make a long story short. A new front left hand fender is due to arrive today, but there is still no word from Tesla on when the HOOD LATCH (Item #1 on the list) and the PLUG (Item #21 on the list) are going to ship. The saga continues

Unfortunately, welcome to the world of supply chain. The upside here is:
1) Tesla is shipping partial orders; and:
2) They are *proactively* keeping you informed. This is something I've never seen before - most times you're completely beholden to the body shop to provide any information at all. I find this amazing on Tesla's part.

Sorry it's taking so long but hopefully the body shop can start their repair work without the latch.

Last night I got another email from Tesla updating the status of parts ordered for my M3 on 11/11. A For several days now, the only parts the collision center ordered that have not arrived are a hood latch and a 36mm diameter plug. Last night's email indicated that the collision center has placed a new order for those two parts. Unsurprisingly, there is still no word from Tesla on why those relatively simple parts have not shipped, while more complex parts have.

I hope this turns out to be the next to last installment in this thread. Yesterday, as I have been doing since my M3 went to the collision center on 11/1, I checked on the car using my app. It was no longer inside the collision center. It was parked in the lot outside, and it was charging!. I wrote to my contact at the collision center and he wrote back that the car was fully assembled and that the next step would be to do some test driving to make sure there were no rattles that needed further attention. He also wrote, "We still have a little bit to go with buffing, detailing, programming etc. We are hoping to have this ready for you within the next couple days." It's interesting that he said they have to do some programming. I know the car is a computer on wheels, but I'm still curious about the programming and will ask about it when I get the car. I'll do one more report after I've had the car back for a few days, and after I've seen for myself whether the car is as good as new, or not.

I finally got my M3 back from the collision center on Friday morning. It was sitting by itself out in the sun when I got there. It looked as good as the day I first picked it up 14 months ago. You'd never know it had nearly 10,000 miles on it never mind that it had been in an accident. I walked over to it and looked over the repairs to the front end. Everything looked as it should, so I went inside to get the paperwork. The insurance company's estimate had been about $3200. The repair shop's estimate had been $8250. The actual price tag was $9,206. The woman at the front desk walked back outside with me, made sure the car was out of service mode and handed me back the key card. I used the app on my phone to unlock the car and checked inside the frunk to make sure there were no lingering issues there. Then, I got in the car, checked all the settings to make sure they were as I had set them before the accident, and went on my way. I had a 74 mile drive back home on mostly quiet roads. Everything about the way it drove and handled seemed as good as new. Of course 74 miles is hardly an acid test, but all seems well. If any one from Massachusetts is reading this, I highly recommend Wagner Collision Center in Worcester for any kind of collision repairs.
