I personally pay for private medical care outside of my insurance plan. I feel I get more honest medicine when I do that. When needed I go use my insurance.

Ok so I have heard that before tried it myself once and the cost was much higher. That was because the insurance negotiated prices with the provider. That doesnt go away with a single insurance company. It lets them put even more buying power behind the negotiation. Let the Medicare Insurance company say to hip replacement device manufacturers. We are looking for who will provide artificial hips for the 350 million people covered by Medicare and see how quickly those device manufacturers give the Medicare Insurance company a deal.

Really what I want is for us to look at what is being done all over the world and take from different plans what works well and what doesnt and create a new system. Fact is the United States is the only 1st world country that does it this way. It isnt true that only rich socialist democracies with lots of oil have single payer and or universal healthcare systems that are far less costly, far more efficient and have better outcomes.

My doc is my best friend. So I let my best man, and my other buddy who is an internist duke it out on what's best for me. Then we all go on a backpacking trip together. Sometimes I wonder if they want to push me off the cliff. Cost is not really the issue. Quality care is. They order up what's needed. I send them a check every year(both). I want to live, not save money.

Agree with everything else you said. Negotiate just like you do with contract with boeing, lockheed or any contractor etc..... hopefully better than that..

Thats great and all. As soon as you can arrange that everyone in the country has a best friend is a Dr. then we will be set.

To me insurance works best when the pool is large. What could be larger then everyone in. When I owned my company we were about 40 people and I had an employee succumb to cancer. Insurance went up 30% the next year. Would have been far better had everyone in the company been in one massive pool with the rest of the country. You work then payroll deduction (like existing Medicare) pays into the pool. Everyone working pays into Medicare. Something happens and you insurance still continues.

I have paid for health insurance for 32 years. I have not gotten out of it what I paid in, not even close. That doesnt make me angry. It is how insurance works. I paid car insurance for 27 years without ever making a claim (damn kids stopped that). I have never made a homeowners claim and have owned 4 homes and 2 rental properties. Thats just how it works. Severely knocking on wood.

Was one of your reasons for purchasing a Tesla was because they are more efficient? Do you believe that with less moving parts to go bad that a Tesla should require less maintenance.
No. And my Tesla has been in to Service more than my BMW.

Why shouldnt we do the same with health insurance.

Think about what that means.

It means I’m replacing the inefficiencies of the current system with the inefficiencies and incompetence of the government.

If those are my choices I’ll stick with what I’ve got.

Since we can't agree I propose we hold a contest where contestants throw a dart at a globe and the first developed nation someone hits we fully adopt whatever system they have. Guaranteed to be better than the mess we have now (keeping ~80% of my $$$ in protected IRAs + bankruptcy is my healthcare plan).

..... this is also essentially option 3 :)

But Medicare has shown it is far more efficient. Overhead of less then 2% compared to 20%+ for private health insurance. After all private health insurance has far more employees trying to deny coverage. Also it isnt just in the organizations that are more efficient with just 1 health insurance company. All the providers are more efficient when they have only 1 insurance organization to have to communicate with. Us patients are more efficient. I went through what I had to do last when my son had appendicitis. That isnt a 1 off thing. That is how it works today.

Certainly important, but not the end all be all. Seems like nibbling around the edges. The whole structure of how we process healthcare in this country is a trainwreck.

Unfortunately wholesale change in anything is hard to accomplish with large groups of people. Especially for people used to a system. Whether it works or not. People don't like change.

I prefer to nibble around the edges as I doubt my ideas would solve the problem, and I don't want a TLDR to show up.

Except all over the world the government is what has provided far better solutions then in the US. The whole government cant do anything is old and tired. Especially when Medicare already exists and is very well liked.

I'm looking forward to when we privatize police and fire departments. I saw a pan handler get robbed by a homeless man the other day. The police responded. Why? Neither of those two pay taxes. Why are MY tax dollars funding that resolution?!

It sounds like most people here think healthcare reform would be bad... You guys did buy Teslas right? I am not talking to trolls here..

it looks like you might be the troll... was that your intent to start a political debate on a Tesla forum? If you want to really help healthcare reform vote for Trump... 4 more years will allow time to unscrew all the tentacles of disaster hidden in the ACA (affordable... really?) and some real healthcare reform can move forward.

Is this really a topic that can be debated on TMC? Aren't the mods just going to lock this thread instantly as soon as they see it?

Yes.

No.

It is in the off topic area. We have some different views, but Tesla's can bring us together for healthy discussion on a wide range of topics.
