All: 28th St. Metro Cruise was nice. Obviously more cars came out in the latter/evening hours than in the afternoon. Since we had no time to set up or organize a place for us, I just cruised and looked for other Tesla owners about. I did find one and later caught up with him in a parking lot, although he was nowhere near the vehicle. In the meantime I parked my car near his and had dozens of people come up and ask questions. The other owner slipped out without me being able to see him or at least say hi, but I did capture a couple pics of his car and mine. They're posted on the FB page:

At this point, I don't know of any other cruise events in MI. I would like to know better where the charging stations are going to be built so we can organize to have an event at the ribbon-cutting. Any of the guys who had contacts with Tesla for Woodward Dream Cruise : Can we hit them up to find out more on that? Thanks.

Roadtrip to Traverse City and Leelanau Peninsula

I have been reading about all thousand miles trips fellow TMC members have taken, and was itching to do mine since I ordered my 60 kWh. Finally received my car on July 22 and had planned a trip on August 3, however had to cancel that as insurance and registration issues were not solved. I made the trip last weekend August 23-25 and was a modest 650 mile trip, considering a new owner and without any experience to charge in the wild. I was however forewarned to plan some backups along the way by fellow MI owners. I just read blogs by Vexar and alisongmz, and hope to see more roadtrips from 60 kWh folks. I tried to put this up as a blog but couldn't upload images, so putting down in a post. Here are the details. Enjoy.

Trip Route - check out the link for route and stops along the way. Somehow could not merge with following map.

Charger Details - check out this page for all the stops, charger details and charging time etc.

Day 1:
Started from home with charge upto max range of 210 miles and our first scheduled break was Soaring Eagle RV Park 140 miles away. Made it to the RV Park with 70 miles left. We had booked an RV site for charging. Paid for one day, but owners are very accommodating and with one day's charge we used the site for 2 days. Charged for one hour and rated miles reached to 100 miles. Had a little break and light refreshments. We thought it would be ok to reach our next stop and overnight stay at Camp Cadillac RV Park. However it was after sunset and could not put the car in cruise, so had to drive manually and used up lot of energy. I noticed that the route was also uphill. Arrived at Camp Cadillac with 15 miles to spare. We had booked a cabin at Camp Cadillac and a RV site. No problems charging overnight. When we left at 700 am, car was charged with max range of 210 miles. Camp Cadillac is family owned and will give you a RV site just across the cabin.

Day 2:
All the pain of the first day was taken for Day 2, and this was our extensive sightseeing day. First we stopped by at Sleeping Bear Dunes Park HQ at Empire, MI. We then took the famous Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive with frequent stops at Glen Lake Overlook, Dunes Overlook, Lake Michigan Overlook and Dune Climb. Also gathered courage to went down and climb back up again the famous 900 feet steep sand dune. Visited Glen Haven, had lunch in Glen Arbor and paid visit to historic Fishtown in Leland. Drove to Grand Traverse Resort. Grand Traverse Resort is a beautiful facility, however my main purpose to stay there was access to chargers in the parking lot. These are OpConnect J1772 chargers. I had OpConnect card, which did not work and panic set in. Tried credit card, didnt work. Called customer care, no answer. Started thinking that backup plan may need to set in motion. My backups were Old Town Parking Deck in Traverse City and Cambria Suites, though none offered the comfort of charging overnight and It was beginning to look like disaster. Thought I would try it last time. Launched iPhone OpConnect app and scanned the barcode on the charger and charging started. Left car for charging for 3 hours till we get ready to go out again. Went to downtown Traverse City, thought will try Old Town chargers. As michiganmodels had described chargers on level 1 and 2 didnt work, I had enough time to charge it overnight at the resort, so didnt care to charge there. Had nice dinner at Firefly and went back to hotel. Grand Traverse has a separate casino, though not an MGM, they have done a good job with it. Hotel provides a shuttle so went to see it. However were exhausted and called it a day then. P.S. Traverse City has 2 good RV Parks, Timber Ridge RV Resort (has cabins) and Traverse Bay RV Park (only RV sites), can be useful in time of pinch.

Day 3:
Car was charged overnight with max range of 210 miles. We had our brunch at Apache Trout Grill, a nice little restaurant on the water at west bay. Took a drive down the M-37 to Old Mission Lighthouse. Old Mission Peninsula has nice wineries, we thought we will have time to visit atleast couple, but could not due to check-out time. Reached Grand Traverse Resort again and put the car in charge again. Resort has its own beach, and they provide shuttle service for hotel guests. We were planning to get 2 hour charge, so spent time at the beach. However realized that charging had stopped after one hour due to some reason, still had enough juice to make it to the next stop at Soaring Eagle RV Park. Arrived at RV Park with 70 miles to spare, however needed atleast 3 hour worth of charge to make it home without any problem. Soaring Eagle is a big complex with restaurants, hotel, golf course, casino and indoor waterpark, has a shuttle between these properties 24X7. Spending time didnt really require an effort. Charging was sufficient in 3 hours and was able to reach home safely.

OpConnnect chargers at Grand Traverse Resort (4 ports of level 2, 3 out of 4 spots were ICE'd. Brought it to front desk's attention, They will reserve the spot for you during your stay and put cones in the parking space)

The trip was absolutely fascinating. Tesla was out of place at Traverse City and met a lot of stares. Surprisingly met few people who had put down deposits as well, but were having second thoughts. They were surprised to hear that we could make this journey in 60 kWh. Many people stopped by and had a look at it. Overall people saw that you can live with an EV in real world situation. The trip will be easy to make once superchargers come to Michigan. My average energy use was 270-280, and could have pushed a little further, but not totally immune to range anxiety.

Hello,
I'm in Holland. I'm not a Tesla owner yet. I'm thinking of ordering one in the spring of 2014 but I don't know if I can wait that long. Could some of you comment on the service that you had being in Michigan? Does anyone drive the Tesla in the snow? That was one reason I was delaying the order to spring. Maybe some of you can convince me to get it sooner so I would be bold enough to take it in the snow.

@rainman. Welcome to Michigan thread on TMC. Quick question, did you also post the question on our Facebook page? I had planned to reply this evening, but got delayed. I just received mine in July. Haven't had any major service issue yet, but Michigan gets serviced from Columbus. I spoke to them as I have a small bubble in paint (size of a dime), but company is ready to come and take the car to Columbus to fix that. Fellow owners have had exceptional service from Columbus center. Good news is, we have been working closely with the company and there will be a service station in Detroit before year end (already on the company website), that can solve your anxiety.

Tesla drives well in snow. See few links below. @michiganmodels and @dan scherer have had the car for longest in Michigan and should be able to tell you about winter driving first hand. People have been driving it in snow and it handles well beyond any expectation. Just need 19" tires. All the best. Keep us informed and will be happy to answer any other questions you might have.

Contact @wmgill (Grand Rapids) @phoster (Holland) both on TMC , and Sabine (South Haven) on Facebook if you want to talk with local owner. Stay in touch, you are most welcome to come to our next event, though none in plan right now, we should have something in next couple of months.

Yes, that was me on Facebook page. I appreciate the quick response. Thanks for the snow info. I'll read up on the references you gave. Nice to hear people are having good experiences with the service center.
I hear they deliver to your home when it is ready, correct?

rainman. Those of us around Holland would probably work with the Chicago service center. You would have an option of having them send out a Ranger depending on the scope of work. No service required for me since taking delivery in late June, however I initiated a service call last weekend as my 3G connection stopped working. It self-corrected on Monday so I canceled the appointment. Obviously no snow driving experience for me yet, but I kept my old ICE SUV (which I have only driven once since getting the Tesla). I have read good things about the Model S on snow, but not sure I would take the risk if heavy snow or ice was forecast.

Rainman50 - I received my Model S in October 2012. I have driven over 13,000 miles. Service is great. You will receive service out of Chicago (or Columbus) until the Metro-Detroit service center opens before the end of the year. My Model S handled better in the winter (i.e., snow) than my wife's AWD SUV (50 50 weight distribution and electric steering outperforms an ICE drive train. You'll understand this winter when you drive yours).

Finally, "advice is what we ask for when we know the answer." Please post your final configuration and delivery date. Looking forward to meeting you in your Model S at a Michigan Tesla Owner Event before the end of the year.

If you have any other specific questions, feel free to PM me.

Plug-In Day Event

National Plug-In Day is on September 28-29. Last year Plug-In day was celebrated in Ann Arbor and Lansing, I havent seen anything yet. Just want to throw an idea, what if we plan to organize the event this year. Please share suggestions about how we can do this. I have contacted few people to see if we can collaborate for the event. Should we just meet as a club on that weekend, if so then where? If you have attended past events, then share the experience for sure.

Washtenaw Community College Car Show

Did not win any trophies but a lot of people loved the car. I could have won the coolest car award if they had one. It was nice to see and talk to lots of people. I had no idea that this would be this big.

Michigan Models: I just sent you a message (Sunday Night) and you replied but it said my box had too many in the inbox, only 4, holycow. So I deleted them. I did not see the message come in after I deleted them.
Can you send again? Then it has a limit of 1 per hour message to send , another holycow. Anyway I guess I see it in the morning.

Thanks

Lansing HPWC is now Open:

Below is a picture of where the ramp is approximately located, it may be in the green space). It is located off of 127 just North of Lansing. The address is NCG Cinema, 2500 Showtime Dr, Lansing Charter Township, MI 48906. This picture does not have the ramp, but trust me it is already built. J Again, this is in the far north end of Eastwood Town Center. The Tesla Charger is located on the second floor. The ramp is not officially open, but the owner has given the okay for electrical vehicle owners to use the charger. There is also a dual PEP Station available for charging.
