Congratulations Aphysician! Was that only a month from ordering to delivery? They sure are building them quickly even for the 60 kWh. If the next 6 months go as well as the first half of the year I may be able to join the club officially without waiting for Gen III, but it's a waiting game for now.

@ timf, ohaq, sp4rk

Thank you. Drove it for 50 miles on first day. I drove seidste's 85 kWh before ordering, thought that 60 kWh will be more humble in performance. I was wrong, I cant notice difference or may be I was driving 85 kWh very carefully. I cant help but wonder what will it feel to drive P85.

I had held my order till all the announcements were done. Saved some money on options. Ultimately decided on an inventory car (sitting on the factory floor), got minor discount. It was supposed to be delivered in a week, however they couldn't find a delivery person in July 4 week. I couldn't take delivery the week after, so it took 3 weeks for delivery.

Hi everyone,

johnymack2 will showcase his multi-red P85 at concours this sunday. Will be a perfect car to show at concours. Please see the event details on the previous page. If anyone else attending the show then let him know. Please share the event details with pictures.

For anyone interested. I drove from Royal Oak to Northport Michigan this weekend (a 277 mile trip). I easily could have made it on one charge. However, I had to use the restroom  So, I stopped in Traverse City. There are 5 charging stations in the Old Town Parking Deck (Google Maps). My energy efficiency translated into over 310 miles of range

Here are my driving stats:

Whoa, 258 Wh/mi. Haven't heard of it before. You've got to share how did you achieve that efficiency. We are planning a trip to Traverse City, however have few concerns as a new owner. The distance to Traverse City from my place is 250 miles, so I have got to stop once for few hours in my 60 kWh, then will also need to recharge at Traverse City before leaving and stop again on way back. I looked up the road in plugshare, and found few J1722 in Midland and in Old Town Parking Deck. Here are few questions.

(1) Can I borrow your car? just kidding
(2) I guess I will have to switch my car in Range mode, even then I can get only 210 miles
(3) How fast (miles/hour) is the charging rate on J1772?
(4) We will only be gone for 2 days, is this enough time for Model S to be charged fully in Traverse City?
(5) Which route to take, via Midland or via Lansing?
(6) I know most of us are in SE Michigan, I really wish we had an owner somewhere in Mid michigan and would have asked him if I could use charger for the night. wmgill in Grand Rapids seems to be the only savior in this situation.
(7) Would it be possible for you to do a blog in TMC about your trip? It would be first blog from Michigan and will really help us.

I will be calling you for recommendations.

Fellow Michigan Tesla owners,

http://concoursusa.org/

My wife (Audrey) and I had the honor of having our Model S in the Concours d'Elegance in Plymouth on Sunday. We got to meet tons of people, including many journalists and car enthusiasts. I even had the chance to shake hands with Wayne Carini.

I arrived around 6:30am. While pulling in with the other classic cars, I got some hesitation from the registration crew. I think they thought I was lost and needed to go to the 'regular' parking lot. But the process of getting onto the course was seamless.

We got positioned pretty quickly and went to work setting up. This is my detailer, Zeke, putting the finishing touches on the car.

I got connected to Zeke by chance through Tesla. I needed a paint correction (badly) on the loaner when I picked it up 3 weeks ago. There are not enough compliments on the work Zeke did on the car. He worked for 6 hours on Friday night and 12 hours on Saturday to polish and seal (C.quartz) the car. It looks better than if I got it directly from the factory. http://www.mintyourcar.com/

Here's a picture of the FOX 2 news van that was set up in front of our car prior to the opening. If you were up around 7:30, they did a 4-5 minute live feed with me. Pretty exciting. The reporter was in love with the car.

Here's a pic of the typical crowd we saw throughout the day. Notice anything interesting about the crowd around the other EVs?

My wife being the excellent Tesla Ambassador. Brian Joseph (the chairman of the event) commented to me after the event that we did an excellent job of representing Tesla, and that we should figure out how to get Tesla to pay us some commission. I would say about 30% of the people that asked us questions assumed we worked for Tesla. We even had a few people take the liberty of opening the doors and sitting in the car assuming it was a demo. Brian thought it might have been because we are both (relatively) younger than many of the other owners of cars in the show.

It started raining right at 4:00, so the crowd cleared out pretty quickly. Luckily it only lasted about 10 minutes. I used the opportunity to take some pictures of the car alone on the course:

It was a day we will never forget. A very surreal experience. We're looking forward to meeting some of you at the cruise in a few weeks!

I will let anyone borrow my Model S if I can borrow their Model X

(2) I guess I will have to switch my car in Range mode, even then I can get only 210 miles
If you have a 60 kWh Model S, you have two options (see below)

(3) How fast (miles/hour) is the charging rate on J1772?
17 Miles of Range Per Hour

(4) We will only be gone for 2 days, is this enough time for Model S to be charged fully in Traverse City?
Yes, see below

(5) Which route to take, via Midland or via Lansing?
Best route: West Bloomfield Township, MI to Old Town Parking Deck - Google Maps This is also how your Model S' Google Maps/Tesla Nav will direct you

(6) I know most of us are in SE Michigan, I really wish we had an owner somewhere in Mid michigan and would have asked him if I could use charger for the night. wmgill in Grand Rapids seems to be the only savior in this situation.

Here you go:

Speaking from experience, heading "Up North" from Metro-Detroit, as of today, there are two "best practices:"
1) Charge Max Range with a 60 kWh or you can be adventurous (like me) and charge "standard" with an 85 kWh battery. This route is the most direct and provides the most optimal speed limit(s) for range efficiency from Metro-Detroit to Traverse City: West Bloomfield Township, MI to Old Town Parking Deck - Google Maps Here are the key points:
i) Drive the speed limit and use cruise control. Yes, we have the fastest and coolest car made. However, it goes from being the really cool car to really lame when you run out of juice. So, if the speed limit is 70 MPH, drive 70 MPH. Also, use cruise control; your watts per mile will be lowest when in cruise control rather than attempting to manually maintain a constant speed.
ii) Here's another data point: I left Traverse City with a standard charge of "240 Rated Miles." Here is how I fared:
image.jpeg
image-1.jpeg

iii) The difference between my drive up to Traverse and down state from Traverse was:
-Going North to Traverse City: a) I rode solo b) cargo was a weekend's gym bag worth of clothes c) experienced 20 miles of single lane traffic through Coleman, Michigan
-Driving South from Traverse City: a) My wife, daughter, and dog rode in the car b) we carried a baby stroller, the Tesla Rolling Duffel full of clothes, and another 35 pounds of baby-related "stuff" c) we experienced a 45 minute delay on I75 South around Flint (in addition to the same 20 mile single lane traffic through Coleman, Michigan).
-Heading North and South, climate control was set between 65 and 70 and I had the music on.
iv) As illustrated in iii - the trip is possible on a "Standard" charge with an 85 kWh Model S, but I would not try a "Standard" charge with a 60 kWh Model S. Actually, I would try it. I would not recommend anyone else try it. In other words, if you would not attempt a 236 mile trip with a "240 Rated Range" projection with your wife, kid(s), and dog in the car, then I would not attempt the trip with the "Standard" charge 60 kWh

2) The best option if you want to play it safe is: Rent an RV spot at Soaring Eagle Casino in Mount Pleasant. My original plan was to charge at Soaring Eagle Hotel and Casino. However, I experienced the Model S was going to handle this trip with no problem, and I canceled the reservation(s). Here are the details:
i) Soaring Eagle Hotel and Casino (Soaring Eagle Casino Resort) has an RV park located approximately 5 miles (Soaring Eagle Hideaway RV Park) from the Hotel & Casino.
ii) The RV park has NEMA 14-50 service, which will allow you to charge at 27 miles of range per hour.
iii) The RV park has a shuttle service that runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to the hotel and casino every 30 minutes (I can't recall if it is 15 minutes or 30 minutes, someone would need to verify that).
iv) The cost for an RV spot varies based on season, but the peak rate is $64.00 (Hideaway RV Park Rates and Information).

Let me know if anyone has any other questions. I am heading back to Leelanau next week, so I can report my statistics if anyone is interested.

Hi Jonathan,

Thank you very much for a detailed report of the event and amazing pics. Car looks absolutely beautiful. Kudos to you for being an excellent ambassador for Tesla and the club. Wish more of us could have joined you. Hope to finalize some details of the cruise this week after I finish my shift block.

@michiganmodels

Thank you for explaining everything in detail. I can see the light now. So 12-15 hours of charge at Traverse city (on J1772) should be good for return journey. Will stop for couple of hours either way on Hideaway RV park, that should give enough juice to reach home with few miles to spare. Also found some J1772 plugs at Grand Traverse Resort in Acme near Traverse City on plugshare. I may just stay there and charge overnight. I also emailed the RV park, and see if they would let us use the NEMA plug for a fee.

Plan to take one of this route to Soaring Eagle Hideaway Park:
Farmington Hills, MI to 5514 E Airport Rd, Mt Pleasant, MI 48858 - Google Maps
Farmington Hills, MI to 5514 E Airport Rd, Mt Pleasant, MI 48858 - Google Maps

I would definitely play it safe as this would be my first trip on Tesla, put the car in range mode, plan to stop at the RV park for sure to top off and ready to drive even below the speed limit.

269 wh/mi with all that extra weight on the return trip is even more impressive and you still had some 20 miles buffer. We were planning our trip on August 3/4 but then pushed it off a bit. I would definitely be interested in knowing your numbers for that trip.

One more question, how much time SOS needs to order personalized license plates?

Michigan Tesla Owners (Woodward Dream Cruise Planning Meeting)

I think we should plan a meeting before the dream cruise to finalize details. The place and time we can decide based on who will be attending. I was thinking August 9-10-11. If we decide to do August 10, then few of us are meeting at Saline EV show. I think we should do it somewhere in the middle, so the folks in West Michigan can also come. Is Lansing a good choice? Please convey your availability for the meet.
