I think I saw an article or quote talking about how the 2170 cells being made for Powerwalls were different chemistry from the existing car batteries. The spin seemed to be that it was about optimizing to the application, though, and I don't think it said anything about the cells for the Model 3 one way or the other.

back in 2014 JB and Elon talked about how the cells produced from the Model 3 (compared to Model S) will have a "next generation" anode and cathode material in addition to a change in the chemistry to reduce costs. The chemistry change alone will increase capacity by 10-15% according to JB.

JB and Elon were talking about cells produced by the Gigafactory. I'm not aware of S/X cells being produced by the Gigafactory.

Jeff Dahn's comment about his research about to finally make it's way into Tesla products was also very recent.

Dahn seems to be concentrating on NMC chemistry, which is what Tesla is using for stationary storage. I'd expect his work to show up there first.

Sure possibly... it doesn't change that we know the 2170 chemistry will be different than current 18650 cells.

My point is I don't think chemistry changes which have not shown up in stationary storage yet will be ready for the Model 3 launch. My sense is that testing/validation for new chemistry changes takes longer than that..

But they've been planning these changes for three years... and again it was already confirmed by JB and Elon.
