It takes a standard size rectangular number plate, but a very thin metal one. I've just measured the ones I've removed and they are only 1.4mm thick. A standard plastic number plate is about 3.5mm thick, and will not fit in the Tesla bracket.

With the Model 3 you can remove the number plate holders front and rear, and screw/stick any plates to the plastic plinths that are attached to the bumper.
