Blog Model S Plaid Receives EPA Rating

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a rating of 387 miles range for the Tesla Model S Plaid with 19-inch wheels and 348 miles with 21-inch wheels.

The rating is slightly under Tesla’s figures of 390 miles of range. Still, pairing that amount of range, 1.99-second 0-60 mph time, and a reported record quarter-miles run for a production vehicle, is quite a statement from an all-electric four-door sedan.

Last week, the company’s 2021 Tesla Model S Long Range Plus received a rating of 405 miles of range and a combined city/highway MPGe of 120.

The figures are are an improvement over the 2020 Tesla Model S Long Range Plus, which had an EPA rating of 402 miles of range and 117 MPGe, as well as the 2020 Tesla Model S Long Range that was rated at 373 miles of range and 111 MPGe.

The Model S Plaid is priced at $129,990 before options.

Fake news? (For the 19" - the 21" information is correct...)

Hold the presses here. Now admittedly I don't follow Model S that closely, but I don't see a Model S Plaid 19" on the EPA website with 387 miles.

I only see the 19" Performance Model S. The data here (110MPGe, 387 miles) exactly match the data that's been in the EPA datafile (and was submitted to EPA in late 2020, see link below for the raw data) for a long time now. Am I missing something? The Model S Plaid with 19" wheels will definitely be listed as the Plaid, and I don't see it yet.

I expect the Model S Plaid 19" to have slightly over 110MPGe (I'll guess 113MPGe), though range may be basically this 387-390 miles number (the Model S Performance 19" had 104kWh of energy drawn during the test, and perhaps Model S Plaid will be slightly lower).

Finally, to rule out the possibility that the tested the Plaid way back in September somehow, this does not look like a Plaid (lower front bumper corners, chrome door handles?):

Did the range change since you ordered it?

No. But I have a feeling it’s going to go down significantly. Especially since I got the 22” wheels.
