My 2016 Tesla Model S 75D story - purchased June 2019

And, based on the pix, you don’t have a yellow bordered screen! Your car’s value just doubled. ;)

BTW, mine is silver too and it always amazes my wife and me that Tesla discontinued silver. The car looks so good in it! Enjoy!
Thanks very much Ken! It's still a dream come true!!

On the drive to Letchworth state park this past weekend, I didn't see a single Tesla on the road. It's strange but feels great

I started my Level 2 charging solution today. This is a DIY job as I did the wiring in my basement a couple of years ago and passed electrical safety inspection. Please note, I am not an electrician. I've just done a lot of reading here and on other sites.

I deliberately decided to install the NEMA 14-50 plug charging solution only (using a dedicated circuit/run of course) and forego a Tesla High Power Wall charger for the simple reason that the former allows me to charge the battery to full from empty in 8 hours. That's fast enough for home charging as far as I'm concerned. This may not apply to you as you may feel that is too slow or perhaps you use up all your range (400 km) in less than a day and need to charge up again quickly and head out the same day. :)

  1. I got a contractor to cut the drywall and drill a hole from my garage to my basement as that was the only part of the install I was not 100% certain about. See the 1st and 2nd pictures
  2. My electrical panel is already at 200 amps, so I didn't need to upgrade that.
  3. I bought the following parts (this would be all that you would need to buy for a typical install)
    • 30 feet of 6/3 gauge conduit wrapped wire. This is overkill as you don't necessarily need to have the whole run of the wire in conduit. See the 3rd and 4th pictures. Cost before tax: CAD$159.97
    • 50 AMP circuit breaker - see 3rd and 5th pictures. Cost: CAD$61.97
    • NEMA 14-50 plug - see 3rd picture. Cost: CAD$5.34
    • Plug mounting box - see 3rd picture. Cost: CAD$9.95
    • Fitting pipe for cable to go into mounting box. See 3rd picture. Cost: CAD $6.87
  • Electrical safety inspection including tax: CAD$90.00. Please get your install inspected so that you don't run into any complications in the future (bad install causing a fire or something worse)
  • Grand total before labor = CAD$365.83
I will update this after I've completed the run of the cable and connections just prior to the drywall fix. I will also make a video as that may help others as well.

Our 14-50 installation is very similar. We ran ours in a metal conduit outside the drywall in the garage, and then in the wall to the box. The total run to the box was about 16 feet. We used the same size wire that you did. It has worked very well for us. We are really lucky to have a supercharger within walking distance of our house for a fast charge if we need it. Good luck with your installation. I hope your inspection goes smoothly.

Congrats! Welcome to the L2+ @home club!
Thanks!
right on man and welcome; many of us have been die hard ICE fans but once we went EV we can't imagine going back; have you driven the Lexus again recently ? It'll feel like a bucket of bolts POS after cruising around in the S so much.
Thank you!

I actually still have the Lexus and it definitely doesn't drive like a POS. lol. Its actually a very nice car - babied since new and upgraded in all the important areas. Still drives like a new car and is very fast. Definitely not as nice as the S ofcourse and not as fast obviously. :)

Still trying to sell it. What ICE car did you come from to the S?

Thanks!

Actually came from an EV; had a Leaf for almost a year. Before that all kinds of ICE's from Hyundai's to BMW, Nissan, Eagle and a Dodge.

I'm beyond excited to be the proud owner of a 2016 75D (haven't picked up the car yet)!! I've never wanted a very specific car that badly for so long - 5 years now waiting......

It's a bit crazy as I'm a die hard ICE car guy (I currently have a heavily modified V8 engined japanese sedan (1999 Lexus GS400) that I've had since it was almost brand new. Some pictures below.

I bought the 2016 75D last week from Tesla Canada directly, so it comes with a 4 year/80k km warranty starting now. It has only 26K km ( 16.25k miles) and all the options (other than the Upgraded stereo. I paid $73.6 CAD (USD $55.7K). Metallic silver on Black leather. See pictures below.

Huge thanks to NavSarin for giving me a heads up on this deal that appeared for just 1.5 hours on the Tesla site and then was gone. It got sold before I even saw it! Anyway, I called the regional sales rep and he also confirmed it was sold. Next morning I got a call from Sean Singh (the regional sales manager for Canada) and he said that the financing didn't go through for the buyer and I could buy it if I wanted. The rest is history. :)
