I vastly prefer Android to iOS but an iDevice will work better as a primary car key due to many reasons I'm not going to rehash again. That said, seems silly to choose a phone around this one use. I just keep the key card in my wallet use that. Wallet is thin enough I don't need to remove the card from the wallet to detect and it works 100% of the time. Not even the iDevice works 100%.

The only concession I made was to ensure that the app could use my phone’s location at all times as per the advice of my delivery specialist. This is on the most recent release of iOS and the Tesla app.

100% success whether or not the app is active.

Please wait until you actually have your car and don't contribute what you think "should" work based on absolutely no experience at all.

Based on connectivity on similar apps, where you open a door, or remotely turn on a electric vehicle to precondition a car, my experience with Android has not let me down.. If all you do-gooders only care about having you're iPhones validated, without much electric car experience in YOUR background, go at it. I know what's worked for me.. and my electric vehicles (which I did state). If that doesn't count toward anything to your way of thinking, your loss.

Based on connectivity on similar apps

Unfortunately, that's not good enough in this case. The Tesla car hardware and the design of the app are unique, and operational experience with similar apps cannot be extrapolated to the Tesla app.

Direct empirical evidence from Model 3 owners in the field confirms less-than-100% reliability with Android across a wide range of hardware at the present time.

[Android] App itself does not need to stay open. Frequently, when I open my app, I can tell the OS has killed the app because I see the Tesla logo splash screen before the app presents itself. Yet phone as key still works. There is a backgrounded service that should be running 100% of the time regardless of the app's state.

iPhones are the safest option.
Androids are fun, especially if you're technically minded, but there are too many variables for them to be a safe bet (different brands, different versions, different skins on each version, huge variety of hardware/chips/radios).

Interesting thank you
I will try turning off background app refresh. I have this on.

I started another post under the ui section
Funny I just posted pics of my settings on my phone. Great minds think alike?
I have background refresh on. The only thing I can think of is that your car is in sleep mode. Sometimes it takes a second if I haven’t messed with the app beforehand and the car is asleep, but that’s not really a phone issue, it’s a car issue. Whenever I have opened the app beforehand to precondition or whatever else, it’s worked 100% of the time with no delays.

Could you please check my pics of my settings on a post in the ui section of the model 3 forum

How do you have 100% success rate with the phone key.
Thank you for your help
I should get in the habit of opening the app. That is the only thing I assume I am doing incorrectly. Besides my settings which is listed on the other post. Want to see if we have the same settings.

Pretty much. I turn off Location on my phone unless I’m traveling, so that’s the only difference.
