Thanks, that’s somewhat of a consolation but still not sure if I can live with my kids secured by flimsy seat belts... even though when/where I grew up we didn’t even have seat belts, let alone child seats!

You can secure a car seat just fine with a seat belt. The issue is, it may be more difficult to install it so it is tight enough.
