Hello Folks:

I am getting my new Model Y in Tampa Florida this Wednesday and have several questions:

  1. Do you use a radar detector? Which one?
  2. What are the immediate acessories that I should get?
  3. Links/photos of these accessories?
  4. What else should I know?
Thanks!

I've put probably half a million miles on various cars and never used a radar detector.

I got the trays for under the seats. They've been nice. And the divider inserts for the door pockets. Can't remember where they came from.

Home charging is suuuuuuuuuuuper beneficial. What is your plan for charging?

I am getting a wall connector installed.

I was looking for accessories like all weather mats, cargo mat, door siils , etc.
It is a Performance model, so it would be nice to have wheel protection for the 21" rims.

1. I don't bother with a RADAR detector because I rarely go more than 5 mph higher than the limit. So far, in some 30 years, no speeding tickets. YMMV.
2. Car comes with mats and all. If you're really fashed about cold/wet/snowy weather (just looked.. you're in FL, so no), then those rubber Weathertek mats might be a good idea, I guess.
3. General "how the heck does this car drive, anyway?" issues that would be Very Good To Know can be found on Tesla's web site. Let's see.. Yup: https://www.tesla.com/support/videos/search?search_filters={"Vehicle":1,"Model Y":1}. Strongly suggest going through each and every one of those before taking possession of the car. Yes, the car is basically an automatic, so it's difficult to not be able to drive it, intuitively, but watching the videos cuts down on the surprises.
4. If there's one thing you'll want to Think About, Hard, it's charging the car when it's at home.

On #4: You'll find More Than You Ever Wanted To Know by reading around these forums about How To Charge A Tesla, but let me give you the TLDR version:
  1. If you can swing it, the cheapest, easiest way out is to mount a Tesla Wall Connector (TWC) in the garage or on the side of the house. This is cheaper than using a Mobile Connector and a 220 VAC wall socket. Tricks to make this work:
    1. Have a breaker box with spare slots. If you've got a 200A breaker box, you're likely good to go. Worst case might involve putting in a bigger breaker box; somewhere in the middle an electrician does a, "Load Analysis" (a standard thing) and figures out how big a 220 VAC current your breaker box can supply. Anything more than 20A @ 220 VAC will be good enough; if you've got a good sized breaker box that can support the current, 48A @ 240 VAC (which is the max the car can do) is the way to go.
    2. If your electrician skills aren't top tier, you'll want to hire one to install the TWC. A really simple (big enough breaker box, box is near where the car is) will set you back around $500, excluding the TWC, which is $475 these days. Make DARN SURE the electrician is licensed and knows what they're doing; Tesla keeps lists of approved electricians for each area of the country. If you get funny answers, get multiple bids.
  2. The car comes with but one thing: a J1772 to NACS (the car is NACS) adapter. This lets you charge at public charging stations that aren't DC Fast Chargers (which includes Superchargers). At one time Tesla would supply each and every car with a Tesla Mobile Connector (TMC) that also came with a pair of adapters: NEMA5-15 (standard 120 VAC at 15A) and a NEMA14-50 (220 VAC, but the TMC only supports 32A on this). The general idea was, back in the day, that Superchargers were few and far between so one might have to pull into an RV park or something and get a charge, slowly, that way. These days there's so many blame Superchargers around that charge at ridiculously fast rates (250 kW on an SC, vs. 7.7 kW on a TMC) that most people who've got a Tesla Mobile Connector never take it out of the trunk. So Tesla quit handing them out. You can still buy one, through, if you want to use the 120 VAC socket in the garage, but that baby will only charge at about 5 miles an hour. A TMC is a couple hundred bucks.
5. No spare. This bothers some people more than others. Depending upon your Car Skills, you might get a 12V DC air pump and either a plug kit or, perhaps, one of those Slime bottles that will put junk into your tire long enough for you to make it to a repair shop. In any case, an air pump is generally a good idea.

6. Along with the No Spare, there's No Jack. Again, this isn't that unusual for new cars. If you decide to get some kind of compact jack, then you'll want a set of four "hockey puck" inserts that go into the four holes in the car, two behind the front wheels, two ahead of the rears. The hockey pucks provide a place for the jack to lift the car without damaging the bottom of the car, thinking particularly about that high-voltage, full-of-energy, expensive battery. A set of four pucks for $20 or so on Amazon.

Your best option is to do a search, top right on this page - select "this forum" (rather than "everywhere") and read to your hearts content. You'll find a wealth of knowledge has already been posted, usually many times. Congrat's on your purchase!
You have been assimilated, resistance is fu'tile... ;)

I have used radar detectors for the last 20+ years in all my cars - wouldn't leave home without it. Valentine One. It is saves you from 1 ticket it has paid for itself.

No radar. I sometimes just use Waze navigation on phone if on a road trip and concerned about speed traps.

I have a 3, but I think the following still applies:
I got a mobile connector at delivery.
I got lift pucks.
I had to buy mats; Tesla rubber mats front and back, Tesla textile mat in the trunk (It’s not as practical as rubber, but I think it’s nicer and I don’t ever expect to put mud or snow, etc in there).
I had to buy console trays.
I bought a usb-c cable.
I bought winter tires.

No other doo dads wanted. I like it clean.

One good thing about so many Model Y's out there is that there's a never ending supply of aftermarket accessories available for it. You could almost get whatever you can think of for this car.

At a minimum, I'd say:
-center console sliding tray.
-all weather mats if your location warrants it. It's a must in northern states due to winter weather.
-some sort of cup holder insert that provides "adaptive" grip for cups.

One item not necessary but very nice to have are S3XY buttons. Research them to see if they are for you. I couldn't be happier with mine.

It is a Performance model, so it would be nice to have wheel protection for the 21" rims.
Curbing these rims seem almost inevitable. I've curbed 3 out of 4 on mine in 2+ years. The one that I didn't curb I managed to have it fall on the face of the wheel during a wheel change so it has a couple of very small dents. I would buy a bottle of Uberturbine wheel paint from TSportsline and a set of sandpapers standing by to do DIY repair. I got a can of not-quite-matching spray paint and sandpapers when I curbed my first wheel one week into ownership. Since I'm not that OCD, that was good enough for me and I've used that can of paint on the other 2 wheels I curbed. In fact, last weekend I curbed the first wheel again and did the same repair. 🤣

1. no radar detector
2. Immediate Acceessories
1)floor mat
I got the floor mat immediately when my new model 3 arrived. Floor mat is really important for me.

2) Interior Organizer

3) rim protector
I wholeheartedly recommend using rim protectors. My Model Y wheels have been repaired twice so far, and hub protective caps are really necessary. The following is a wheel protector specially developed for Model Y 20'' Induction Wheel and 21'' Ubertuibin Wheel.

4)cup holder

5) Real carbon products and Alcantara products
I personally don’t like the fabric on the dashboard of the new Model 3 and the new Model Y. The interior of model 3 has been replaced with a set of real carbon accessories. MY changed into a set of Alcantara accessories. But this depends on personal preference. If you have any modification needs, you can consider it.
Real carbon fiber accessories: Real Carbon Fiber Tesla Interior Mods Wrap Kit for Model 3 / Y
Alcantara accessories: Alcantara Tesla Accesorries

I took some photos for Model 3, but not Model Y. Hope it could help you.

This rim protector would help you 😁 It could cover the curb rash and protect the rim.

Hey there!

Exciting times with your new Model Y! Here are some suggestions:

Radar Detector:For a Tesla, where Autopilot is a significant feature, traditional radar detectors might not be as crucial. However, if you still prefer one, Escort Max 360c and Valentine One are popular choices. Just ensure they don't interfere with the car's sensors.

Immediate Accessories:

  1. All-Weather Floor Mats: TESERY offers custom-fit, durable floor mats that'll keep your Model Y's interior pristine. Check them out here.
  2. Center Console Organizer: Keep your essentials neatly organized. TESERY has options designed specifically for Tesla models.
  3. USB Hub: Useful for additional charging ports. There are various brands; just ensure compatibility with Tesla's system.
  4. Chrome Delete Kit: If you're into changing the chrome accents to black, kits are available for a sleek look.
Links/Photos: Check out TESERY's Tesla Model Y accessories for a visual guide.

What Else to Know:

  • Familiarize yourself with charging locations, especially if this is your first EV.
  • Explore Tesla's Sentry Mode for added security.
  • Keep your charging adapters handy.
  • Consider a paint protection film for the front to guard against stone chips.
Enjoy your new ride and welcome to the Tesla community!

I do use a Valentine 1 radar detector. I use it any time I go anywhere other then my normal commute.

I have been very frustrated with the suction mounts that are included with it. So I custom designed a screen mount for it and currently 3d print it and sell it on eBay for very cheap.

Put it up

Drive with it

The mount reuses the suction cups , but instead of pulling on them, it uses them for support and puts it's weight on them (so they don't come off , even if you corner Hard). No glue or sticky tape is needed.

Check it out Valentine1 v2 radar detector removable mount for Tesla model 3 and model Y | eBay

I think the radar detector is a great idea. It is much too easy to speed in a Tesla since there is essentially no difference in the sound or feel of the car between 60 and 80 MPH.

The cruise control and autopilot are close to useless because of phantom braking, cameras that can't see in the rain, weird problems related to shadows, and Tesla's insistence to force the horrible automatic wipers on whenever you engage cruise control. I rarely use cruise or autopilot due to the endless software bugs. So I drive manually most of the time to avoid the irritation of the software bugs, but then I find myself unintentionally speeding frequently.

I love the car, but everything related to cruise control, autopilot, and the wipers is a hot mess and, sadly, has only gotten worse in my 6 years of Tesla ownership. If you try to use the above features, you will spiral down the pointless rabbit hole of trying to get them to work as you would expect. Don't waste any money buying advanced auto pilot or Full Self Driving: they are ridden with bugs (though fun to play with for awhile until you conclude they are a monumental waste of money).

Hello Folks:

I am getting my new Model Y in Tampa Florida this Wednesday and have several questions:

  1. Do you use a radar detector?

No, but I should for I recently did did 120 Mph recently in my MYP 👹

    Which one?
  2. What are the immediate acessories that I should get?

If it’s a keeper, get these:
Tuxmats mats and cargo, full set
Front grill mesh, protects from debris getting stuck inside the mechanics creating annoying noises
Rear, under front seat vent covers, similar reason to above
Min front PPF and full vehicle ceramic
Definitely get rear quarter panels in PPF and top edge of rear bumper
    Window tint all (but optional)
    Center console trays
    Center console protective wrap
    Spigen screen protector, matte
    Arm rest pad (better feel)
    Quality cup holder insert
Uber wheel covers if you have the 18” or 19”, Rimetrix seem to be the best, worth the extra money due to unique design
Teslaunch Rim protectors if you have the 20” or 21”
Quality ceramic treat seats and steering wheel
    All four door sill protectors
Leather head rest pads (adds lux)
Behind center console, rear passenger bin
Tesla installed front mud flaps (these are the best)
    Jack pucks
The behind display shelf is handy
    Magnetic tow hitch cover
Apple Watch app- “Watch for Tesla” BU key
Magbak dual magsafe display mounts for iPhone
    Fanttik USBC vacuum
If not MYP metal pedal covers
If you have a dog, get the additional cargo area and seat covers (quick washing ability)

I like the underseat frame support carpet protection
I like Rear cargo stainless edge protector

For home charging, only get Tesla Universal Wall Connector

    For travel, it’s another list
    Start with above first

  3. Links/photos of these accessories?
  4. What else should I know?

Enjoy all of Teslas ecosystem, its amazing
Learn everything about EVs, will be more fun
Master the Tesla UI/menu and use auto settings/wipers, lights
Research other necessary setting such as no regen driving in snow
Tesla wipers are the best, don’t waste time with any others, I’m over a year with mine and they don’t need replacing
Get home charging, waking up at 80-100% is amazing
Realize if you are hard on the vehicle it will negatively impact tire longevity
Be very careful backing up, the vehicle goes fast
Be very careful of road hazards, striking a large metal object could cause a battery puncture and possible fire
Rotate the tires, front to back and side to side if MYP
Protect the rims with wide turns
No car washes ever, enjoy hand washing frequently
No roof racks, it will hurt range, use rhe tow hitch
No tail gatting due to road debris kicking up and hitting your Tesla
Keep tire pressure up 42 psi
Hasn’t happened to be but backing up into the garage and garage doors coming down on the vehicle are a thing
It’s 4x4 but not in sand, dunes, big rocks, it’s not a Wrangler
Use keep mode when you need to keep food in the Tesla cold for a bit
Defrost from the app to clear ice
Always nav to a supercharge for preconditioning

Def be more, let’s here from others

Thanks!
