The reason cable is the poster child is probably because it has a lot of legal precedent for federal oversight. Also it may be the only customer service experience more loathed the car sales.

Let the market figure it out. I know of several people who are car people who have reserved a Model 3 or already bought a Model S. When the "Big Boys" start looking around at how Tesla "got away" with the direct-to-customer model they will investigate it an see if it is right for them. If it makes financial sense, they will bite. If it does not, they wont.

First the FCC would have to declare they can regulate car sales, because vehicles communicate or something like that. Without getting too political, that's not stretching the statutes more than some government regulation we've seen in recent years.
