No self park

I have seen the car park itself once, now it does not display P when I pull up alongside a parked vehicle.

It does not pop up when alongside a parked vehicle, per se. It will pop up when you drive past an empty spot both neighbors of which are occupied.

Right, and there are other threads about this. Not that dependable to always appear either.

For parallel parking, you need to pull up a little farther than you might for regular parking, past the empty space - once you put it in reverse you'll get the option to auto park. To back into a parking place, there needs to be a car on either side of the empty parking space, and you need to be fairly well lined up, then once you hit reverse, you'll get the option to auto park.
