Not able to claim ownership in Tesla account after buying from third party dealer, what do I do?

Bought an S from a third party dealer, but not able to transfer ownership online. What do I do?

I guess I should have noticed beforehand, but the car was still logged into the previous owner's account (seems to have been a business) and I wasn't able to factory reset it without their password. I went online to try the transfer ownership tool, but when I enter the VIN, it tells me I am:

Unable to claim ownership

  • Check you have the correct VIN
  • Confirm car is not leased
  • Confirm car is not associated with an enterprise account
Not sure what to do at this point. I can prove I own the car, but the tool won't even let me try to claim ownership. Anyone dealt with this before?
