Partition vs Folders

I understand I can put a USB stick loaded with music in the front right USB and then access the music through the Tesla screen.
In order to use Tesla cam and Sentry, I need to create a folder on the USB stick called TeslaCam.
I have read about people partitioning their USB stick to allow for both Tesla Cam - Sentry functionality and music on the same USB stick.
Question - why does one need to partition the USB stick first? Could you not create a folder called TeslaCam and then another folder called Music? Or will this only work if the USB stick is actually partitioned first?
Thx (and apologies if this is an uninformed question).

If a TeslaCam folder exists the USB device is routed to the AP computer to store camera videos on and it is no longer available to the MCU to play music. So if you want to use one USB device you have to partition it.
