Essentially what I got out of the article is that L4 prototypes are actually less safe right now than manual drivers because the L4 prototypes are not reliable yet to be L4 but the companies are nevertheless driving them too much to maximize miles thinking it will accelerate their progress. But driving an unreliable L4 more miles, means more accidents.

The article recommends focusing on quality instead of quantity and conducting autonomous testing in more conservative driving conditions.

The article closes by saying that Pronto is focused not on L4 but rather on developing a robust and safe L2 driver assist with its own driver monitoring system because they believe that a safe L2 system with a driver monitoring system is better right now than trying to do L4 which they believe is still years away.
