I am getting samples of this screw and intend to design a custom socket that will be metal 3D printed. I'll make the file available to anyone who wants to print one up on Shapeways.com

Hi, did you decide to open source this? I'm in a pinch and need to get the thing off tonight. WTH was Tesla thinking?

Yup ... I assumed it would be easy to remove so I left it until a few days before I had a PPF appointment. Tesla Service says the company "took all their tools" as it is a liability issue (crash testing etc.) to remove the license plate. I would have liked to have gone with the Shapeways solution, but I can't wait 3 weeks to get it, so will be using right angle needlenose pliers and a steamer to get the whole mess off. One way or another, it's coming off - I don't understand why it had to be so difficult.
