Rivian Confirms the Tank Turn

Rivian has announced a debatably useful, nonetheless interesting feature for its upcoming electric pickup.

The R1T will be capable of a “Tank Turn,” which means the vehicle can hold its position while spinning completely around.

Each wheel of the Rivian has its own motor. This enables them to operate independently and in different directions. For example, when one side is moving forward while the other side is in reverse, the truck will turn like a tank.

Perhaps, the feature will help a Rivian owner squeeze into a tight parking space.

Rivian has raised billions to bring its electric truck and SUV to market next year. The company is also collaborating with Amazon on the development of an electric delivery van. Amazon has already ordered 100,000 of these vans to be delivered in 2021.

The R1T pickup is expected to go into production next year and start at $69,000. The truck will include four electric motors and three battery packs options – a 180 kWh battery that is expected to offer more than 400 miles of range per charge, a 135 kWh option that gives more than 300 miles of range per charge, and a 105 kWh pack, which will give about 230 miles of range per charge. The R1T has a towing capacity of 11,000 pounds.

I agree, its more fun than functional. I don't think it will hurt the treads if the wheels are all moving in different directions. I could see people going round and round until they get dizzy. LOL

Then you have never driven on mountain roads over riverbeds or storm gulleys in the desert.
Axle and sway bar differentials in current off-roadable vehicles mean to address this to some extent.

Is this the longest running startup ever?
When will they actually make something?
Which is first? Van for Amazon? or pickup?

Rivian is a solid startup. How solid? Recently the chameleon running Amazon put a huge cash injection into their system.
