  • Russian drones struck energy sites early on Wednesday and knocked out power to some parts of Ukraine’s northern Sumy region, regional officials said. The Sumy regional authority said the drones hit targets in the cities of Shostka and Konotop, north-east of Kyiv and near the Russian border. Emergency services were working to restore electricity. Officials have warned of a possible Russian push into Sumy.

Lithuania arms itself for the Russian threat by uniting church, state and society in civil-defence campaign

Military, local governments, NGOs and clergy are working together to defend a Baltic country that fears what the Kremlin might do next

Russia’s military goals are not only focused on Ukraine. “They’re preparing for war against the civilized world,” he said. Meanwhile, in the West, “we’re debating, discussing, but no tangible actions.”

Most Lithuanians are well aware “that if Ukraine falls, the next is all the Baltics,” he said. “We’ve been there before so we don’t want to go back there.”

The Swedish government has agreed to create a support framework for Ukraine, which would allocate 75 billion Swedish krona ($7 billion) in military support from 2024 to 2026, the Swedish government said on May 22.

With this proposal, Stockholm's civilian and military aid to Ukraine since the outbreak of the full-scale war will amount to over 100 Swedish krona (over $9 billion). [My underline.]

They will deny it right up until Russian forces land on the islands they want to steal.

Confusion. No confusion here. It's more stupid games to try to intimidate the west. The only appropriate response is to give Ukraine more firepower.

Speaking of trying to intimidate the west…

The Kremlin has particularly been angered by the French president, Emmanuel Macron, who floated the possibility of sending European troops to fight Russia in Ukraine, and by remarks from the UK foreign secretary, David Cameron, who said Ukraine had the right to use weapons supplied by London to target sites in Russia.

LONDON, May 22 (Reuters) - British defence minister Grant Shapps accused China on Wednesday of providing or preparing to provide Russia with lethal aid for use by Moscow in its war against Ukraine.

Shapps told a conference in London that U.S. and British defence intelligence had evidence that "lethal aid is now, or will be, flowing from China to Russia and into Ukraine, I think it is a significant development".

Shapps did not provide evidence to support his assertion. [...

Would trump be more aggressive in the war against russia? He escalated compared to obama. Sent lethal weapons, where as obama refused.

Congress seems to be asking the President to do the same.

According to the below two posts, Speaker of the house supports Ukraine using weapons as they wish.

The sending of lethal weapons was Congress' doing, not Trump's. He didn't want to sent them to Ukraine and got impeached over trying to extort Zelensky to get some made up political favor.

Congress is now in favor of giving Ukraine more free reign with US weapons on their own. Mike Johnson is still kissing the ring, but he's also shown some independence from Trump's wishes.

The money was approved by Congress. All spending has to start in the House of Representatives. He was also pressured by others in his administration to supply Ukraine. Miles Tyler who was a low level appointee in Homeland Security has written a book about what went on inside the administration. It's called Blowback.

I haven't read the book, but I have seen a couple of interviews with him. A lot of these things were not Trump's ideas. He was cajoled into them by the "adults" in the administration. He also warns that the plan for the second administration is to not have any of those adults around.

From the story, it seems to say it was corrected:
"Correction: A previous version of this blog post incorrectly reported that the Trump administration had approved the first-ever commercial sale of lethal weapons to Ukraine. It stated that Defense Secretary Jim Mattis had publicly supported arms sales to Ukraine; Mattis did not explicitly do so. This post has been updated."

From the various articles you linked and doing a quick search, the funding was long approved by Congress. Obama never acted on it. Trump reluctantly approved some, using it as evidence he was tougher than Obama on Russia. Then in 2019 Trump withheld a $400 million military assistance package to Ukraine, asking Zelenski to aid in investigating Crowdstrike.

  • France has carried out its first test firing of an updated nuclear-capable missile, the ASMPA-R, designed to be launched by a Rafale fighter jet, according to the French defence minister, Sebastien Lecornu. It came a day after Russia said it began nuclear drills in its southern military district, which stretches from Russia into occupied Ukrainian territory. The announcement of Russian drills is partly directed at France after its president, Emmanuel Macron, said he would not rule out sending in troops on Ukraine’s side.
