Russia/Ukraine conflict

Seizing US assets in Russia would just mean taking assets of US companies still doing business there. It wouldn't amount to much. Other than maybe some minor embassy funds, no western country has any significant assets anywhere Putin can get a hold of them. Most of this is just bluster on his part.

The purge is interesting. Stalin did a purge of the Soviet officer corps in the late 30s. It left the Red Army badly short of competent officers when the Germans invaded in 1941. I don't think any army in history has taken the kind of losses the Soviets took and survived.

Today the Russian officer corps has taken heavy losses in Ukraine. The Ukrainians were targeting command posts for a while which really thinned their junior and mid-grade officers as well as killed some senior officers. Now purging the senior leadership in the Kremlin will result in more senior field officers withdrawn from the front to fill the vacancies in the Kremlin. The way this war has gone, Russia doesn't have much in the way of competent leadership at any level, but further reducing the officer corps ends up diluting what competence they have even further.

Allegedly:

The 110th Mechanized Brigade reports that yesterday and today, in total two Su-25 fighter jets were shot down. In recent weeks, 6 Su-fighters were claimed to be shot down by Ukrainian forces. [My u.]

I wonder if Ukraine has moved up another Patriot system?

Is this theory plausible? Are we to expect another incursion somewhere during the Paris Olympics?

Try to be optimistic. Maybe they'll use the distraction to withdraw from Ukraine and pretend like the last 10 years never happened.

A Chinese mercenary speaking about his experience fighting in Ukraine for the fascist invaders. Not much respect for the Russians or their weapons. And he said most new troops there have a life expectancy of 8-10 hours. He keeps counting how many are killed and left behind when they retreat or just run away. "They sent us more Russians... they are all gone." He comes from the PLA and complains about how brutal the Russians are.

  • Russian jamming has kept many of Ukraine’s relatively new long-range GLSDB bombs from hitting their intended targets, three people familiar with the problem have told Reuters. The Boeing and Saab-made ground-launched small diameter bomb has a 161km range. It launches with a rocket motor and then wings pop out to extend its range. But its guidance system has been targeted by Russian jamming that its makers are struggling to counteract.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the globe, one of Russias allies carries out some drills…

A conflict over Taiwan would be catastrophic, and likely involve other countries in the region and beyond. In response to the drills, representatives from Japan, the US, South Korea and Australia called for calm. The US state department told Taiwan’s Central News Agency that it was closely monitoring the situation, while Australia’s foreign minister, Penny Wong, warned that “the risk of an accident, and potential escalation, is growing”.

Quote: U.S. Special Operations soldiers around the country have experienced strange interactions in recent years that they say involve suspicious surveillance of them and their families. Many believe that U.S. military bases have become an increasing target of foreign probes.

Quote: Russians living in the US clearly recruited by the Kremlin have been surveilling homes and families of Special Forces operators outside Fort Liberty. ... Army Colonel shot the trespasser.

Can't wait to see the fearless Putler leading a meatwave attack. That is what he means by "fight on" isn't it? 🤣

Ukraine's Foreign Minister Kuleba has written about this on X:

"
Why are Russian "sources" suddenly telling the media that Putin is willing to halt the war at the current battle lines? It’s simple.

Putin is desperately trying to derail the Peace Summit in Switzerland on June 15–16. He is scared of its success. His entourage sends these phony signals of alleged readiness for a cease-fire despite the fact that Russian troops continue to brutally attack Ukraine while their missiles and drones rain down on Ukrainian cities and communities.

Putin currently has no desire to end his aggression against Ukraine. Only the principled and united voice of the global majority can force him to choose peace over war. This is what the Peace Summit is intended to achieve. This is why he is so afraid of it.

And this is why it is critical to have as many leaders as possible from all continents and parts of the world present. When the entire world speaks out in support of restoring the full force of the UN Charter and international law, Russia will be forced to choose peace.

I find it maddening that ukraine hasn’t already managed to thoroughly carpet all outdoor Russian parked aircraft areas with huge numbers of even very small grenades or something- it shouldn’t take much to ground all their aircraft, at least temporarily.

I know it’s a tall order and a long way clear across Russia, but considering how high the stakes are, surely with all the resources of NATO plus the US, it should have been done by now.

NATO’s boss wants to free Ukraine to strike hard inside Russia

Jens Stoltenberg says the rules on using Western weapons should be eased

May 24th 2024

Nato secretaries-general do not normally attack the policies of the alliance’s biggest and most important member country. But Jens Stoltenberg, whose ten-year stint in charge is coming to an end, has done just that. In an interview with The Economist on May 24th, he called on NATO allies supplying weapons to Ukraine to end their prohibition on using them to strike military targets in Russia. Mr Stoltenberg’s clear, if unnamed, target was the policy maintained by Joe Biden, America’s president, of controlling what Ukraine can and cannot attack with American-supplied systems. [My u.] [...
