Speaker symbol in screen UI

Just noticed a speaker symbol on my UI....not sure what it is for. I press it and nothing seems to happen:

To be clear, it doesn't only show up when you're in reverse. I notice it when stopped in traffic too. Either way, it's meant to silence proximity alerts, which is why you don't notice a difference if you push it while there is no alert going off.

It should "X" out when you push the icon.
