SR: Is the battery top-locked?

Why does everyone seem to think that limited regen is a big deal? It's not. Don't worry about it.

It is not a big deal, though OP has a valid question.

As the SR is a software locked SR+ battery, where does Tesla "lock out" the extra 20 mile capacity of the battery. If on the top end, then once can charge the SR to 100% and still have head room for regenerative breaking. Furthermore, charging a SR to 100% would be the equivalent to charging a SR+ to 90%. A SR could charge to 100% on a daily basis without affecting the battery.

We wish this will be the case but we don't this yet. We do know that Tesla has stated that repeated and frequent charging to 100% should be avoided. If a sw limited car is always charged to 100% and then developed battery problem later, will that void your Tesla warranty? Do you want to risk this?

The thing is, who knows if it works according to this logic. It could be that the capacity is reduced evenly ?
That is exactly what we'd like to find out!

The best way to find this out is not whether there is regen braking after charging to 100percent because regen could be turned off if it 'thinks' the car is full even if it's not due to software.

A better way to figure out if the battery is top locked, and where it will truly be a major positive if it is, is to observe the speed of supercharging from 90-100percent in a SR car. If the battery is bottom locked (god I hope not) it will take a very long time (close to an hour) to charge from 90-100percent. If the car is top locked (which most expect), it should only take 10-15mins to charge from 90-100percent.

There is also a chance Tesla splits the difference and locks out half at the bottom and half at the top or any other variation between. This will be more difficult to pinpoint, but guys like zoomit should be able to get it pretty close once we get some supercharging data from a current SR owner. Where are u guys!?!?!?

Yes, we do not know yet. The OP's question is valid, "When you charge the battery to 100%, is your regen limited?" If people confirm that charging to 100% does not limit regen, then it might be possible that the SR is top locked. Alternatively the lock can be equally distributed. Further testing is required.

Ideally charging a Tesla to 100% is not good for the longevity of the battery. But if it is proven that the SR is top locked, SR users may be able to consider charging to 100% as needed without greatly affecting the battery life. Ultimately, it is up to each SR user to determine their charging needs.
