I had this happen to my 2008 M3 a few years ago. Tesla sent over mobile service and the tech connected his laptop to my car and ran something and then it worked again. Took him a few minutes to complete and 40 minutes to drive to my house. He said sometimes the software just needs to be rebooted/installed. This is the downside to a software based vehicle. Imagine being stranded somewhere without cell service in the middle of the night and something more serious with the software disabled your car.
