Tesla changed our VIN One day before delivery for an older VIN.

So we were givin a VIN last week in the 1515xx range and are scheduled to pick it up tomorrow evening. Our TA just called and said they are having issues getting that vehicle ready for us by our scheduled time tomorrow and instead found another vehicle with all of the same configs that they want us to receive, however the VIN is a 1418XX and 9 miles on the odometer. He says that it still has all of the new updates, but I feel a little annoyed and concerned about the last minute swap for an older build. Am I over thinking it, or should we ask to keep the original vehicle assigned to us, even if it means pushing back our pickup date?

Nothing to be concerned imo. Numerous posts here have reported that VIN # has nothing to do with build dates. You likely have all the updated features of the vehicle except updated headlight - a feature that seems to be only included in MYP at this point. Re odometer, my MY came with more than 9 miles as a brand new vehicle so don't stress about it. Just go pick up the vehicle and make sure to do thorough inspection. Hopefully, you will have a good one and enjoy the ride just like I have been enjoying for last 6+ mons!

Good luck!

As long as they didn't remove your VIN altogether and not assign you a new one, then you should be fine.

I'm in that boat as of last week. ACH payment was made and all of the final paperwork was signed, just now there's no longer a car assigned to me and my delivery date is MIA

... which to Tesla is a notification that you don't want a car and you won't see one delivered. They won't even ship it from the factory if the $$$ are not pending.
Not my experience at all. We paid with a check last year at delivery after inspecting. They cannot require payment prior to seeing the vehicle. They can ask you to but if they required it they’d be getting sued left and right by not providing vehicles in new condition (look how many vehicles are rejected due to quality issues). Also, once you start paying for a vehicle the thought is you can drive it. If you have to wait weeks for one to show up and are making payments that doesn’t work. If they want to delay your reservation because you haven’t paid that is their right but eventually they have to provide you with one because you have a signed contract (your $100) that says they will provide you with the vehicle you ordered. For them to not provide the vehicle they need to refund your money.

Similar situation. Currently going through a refi that was supposed to close last week. It's now closing on 4-1. Ordered LR5 5 days ago. Already have a Vin 149xxx and they want to deliver tomorrow. I can't do anything with credit until after I close this refi. Going to reach out to see what my options for delaying until after the 1st. We'll see how it goes.

You just tell them to hold delivery for a week. If they can’t match your vin to someone else you’ll keep it and take delivery when you’re ready. If they do find someone else, you’ll still probably get a car later this week or next since they seem to be pumping a ton out right now. Slim chance all cars produced will have a home and you will need to wait til end of Q2 for a car but since you are Bay Area that is highly unlikely. You would be high on the list for any orders that are delayed from other parts of the country.

Yes. Tesla doesn’t do VIN’s strictly sequential. My model 3 VIN 86xxx was built the same month and being delivered the same time as others numbered 131xxx.

I was wondering about this. Just got my Y VIN 118xxx and it's so much lower than the 140s and 150s I've seen on here.

If it were sequential, I'd be worried about getting the updated console / heated wheel, etc...

We'll see soon enough, I suppose. :)

Anything above 100k will have heated wheel and laminated glass. You need to find born on date (ask your SA) and after 2/7 will have new console. Our 113k was late January. I’d guess you got matched with an inventory car. Seems way low.

My TA just told me the car left Freemont Factory on 3/23 and is headed to Ohio - so not sure how much product they hold at the factory after build. If the numbers are sequential it looks like a mid-feb build date. He said it will 'definitely' have the updated console and heated wheel.

I don't think they hold them that long. People are getting 163xxx vin cars assigned and delivered this week. What is your build? Could have been waiting for a return/reject if it isn't something they are producing at this time. Ask your SA what the born on date is. Not just the build date which will only be month/year. They should have the specific date it rolled off the assembly line and was given its vin.

I've asked him for the born on date. It's a MYLR, Midnight Silver, 20 Induction, Black interior, No FSD.

They are not sequential but they are also usually not 50k off. I am seeing vins in the 130s that were January orders and February VIN dates. January orders for MSM LR Y with VIN dates of late Feb to early March are 135k+. The VIN dates for cars below 120k are all early Feb or January. Here is a small selection from the order tracking sheet. I think they are tracking pretty linearly so
