Tesla Model S 2014 85

I am thinking about purchasing a 2014 Model S with 88,000 miles on it. It looks very clean. Free supercharging, free connectivity, new tires.

My main worry is about the drive train. I have heard that some 2014s had drive trains that went bad right away. The owner says the drive train has not been replaced. Is there something I can check to see if it has one of the bad units? Or is the fact that it has gone 88,0000 miles with no issues an indication that it doesn't have a bad unit?

Any advice? Anything else that I should check?

Thank you!

Check when the 8 year Battery/Drive Unit ends on it. If it was an early 2014, it's finished, but if it is a late 2014, then you still have warranty.
As mentioned above: drive it: you should not hear any noise from the motor. If there is some milling noise, it needs replacement. Free under warranty, quite expensive otherwise.

Typically those early cars would have had their drive units replaced to better engineered drive units. It's worth checking service history. Early cars will definitly need replacements unfortunately. It will happen sooner or later.

I did check, and it has not been replaced. So I think I am going to avoid it. They guy says sounds great, but I would be worried still.

Got 85D with 44k miles.. repairing it after accident right now… and this leak found under the hood… is that drive train?

I have a May 2014 MS 85 with 93,000 miles. Exactly 3 years after I got it the milling noise started and they replaced the drive unit under warranty in May 2017. Been great ever since and I love the car, but the battery and drive unit warranty for 2014's is up this year. I wouldn't do it. Paying for Supercharging is small potatoes compared to the cost of a drive unit replacement, among other things (I've also had my battery sent back to Fremont for a complete re-wire job due to an electrical fault, my battery heater/cooler replaced after it failed on a roadtrip which prevented me from supercharging, my center touchscreen replaced due to the delamination issue, and my pano roof replaced due to creaks and leaks, all under warranty, fortunately).

Then there's the eMMC issue, the bubbling instrument cluster issue...

Pretty sure the Pyro Fuse is inside the battery pack, but WK057 would be able to help you
