Blog Tesla Rolls Out Dynamic Brake Lights for European Model 3

Tesla’s 2019.8.3 software update contains an interesting new feature for European Model 3 owners called Dynamic Brake Lights that aims to help reduce accidents.

According to the release notes, “If you are driving over 50 km/h (31 mph) and brake forcefully, the brake lights will now flash quickly to warn other drivers that your car is rapidly slowing down. If your car stops completely, the hazard warning lights will flash until you press the accelerator or manually press the hazard warning lights button to turn them off.”

While the feature is offered in Europe by other automakers like BMW, certain government restrictions on automobile lighting make it unavailable in the U.S.

The good news is that Tesla is one of the few automakers that would be able to easily add the feature if approved in the U.S., due to the ability to push software updates.

America knows better. Every manufacturer except Tesla will say it adds cost to the car and they will pay the politicans some bucks and... that's the end of that. I try and do it manually and it does help get the attention of drivers following you.

This is smart. A lot of German sedans already have this feature actually. My 340xi would brighten the brake lights if you really got on the brakes. This is designed to further reduce the chance of being rear ended at higher speeds such as those seen on the autobahn.

No, not really.
Most automotive OEMs build world-spec cars, and do minor regional customization via programming (mph vs. kph, color of turn signal lenses, daytime running lights, brake lights, etc).

BMWs and VW group cars build theirs with dynamic brake lights for the world, then turn-it them off for the US market. You can manually change the configuration and turn them back on, which many folks do. Works nice on the street, but super-annoying on track as every braking zone becomes a distracting Xmas light show :p

Yep, it's really hard not to notice those braking lights when they are flashing.
Especially the LED variety.
