From the "strange bedfellows" department, it seems that the Koch brothers and the Sierra Club have joined other public interest groups in a letter to governors in support of Tesla's right to open their own dealerships.

Koch Brothers, Sierra Club Join Tesla in Fight With Dealers - Bloomberg Business

From the article:
Tesla has been trying to get around the dealer franchise system that has controlled who can sell cars for decades. The public-interest groups’ letter, set to be released Tuesday, argues that existing franchise laws “retard innovation.”
“Tesla’s market entry through direct distribution is providing consumers with beneficial new choices on what vehicles they buy and how they buy them,” the groups said. “Moreover, our concerns are not limited to Tesla, as these laws have similarly negative effects on any company seeking to distribute their cars directly to consumers.”

It isn't that odd when you realize that the Koch's are hard core libertarians. They oppose any arbitrary and capricious government intrusion into the private market.

Ha! Like that "arbitrary and capricious government intrusion into the private market" when it comes to combating global warming.

They are libertarians only when it suits their purpose. In fact, they control much more of the government than people realize and lobby for laws that suit their own needs, not libertarian ideals. Libertarian ideals are a perfect and needed front for them to exercise their control, all while betraying the essence of libertarianism while flexing their muscles.

Not mentioned here is one of the most important groups on the list-- Consumer Federation of America. Having a reputable pro-consumer group on board is the best way to nullify the auto dealer cartel claim that franchise laws are for "consumer protection".
