Tesla To Charge $1k For Black Paint

I agree with your typo.

One of the funniest quotes I saw was:

The 2nd happiest day of your life is when you get a new black car.

The happiest day of your life is when you get rid of your black car.

Black car for spouse seems like a fungible verb.

I had a black car in 1997.
Got another black in 2002.
Got another black in 2018.
Hopefully, never again..

My inner Freud is curious. What was the rationale behind the most recent 2018 Black choice?

1997... new car purchase. One of the better deals I could find. I chose black over other colors.
..
white -yellow
..
2002... new car purchase. Best deal I could find. I didn't really want it but it was one of free colors and they didn't have white available for the price.
..
blue-white-red-blue-grey-white-

2016 black .. used. This one actually looked good with brown interior.

-yellow-grey-white-grey
..
2018... used car purchase. I preferred white but dealer wanted more for the white one.

2019... Model 3. I just could not do another black so soon.

I may have missed it because I'm not as attentive to Tesla as I once was.

Originally, black was the standard, no extra cost color.

Now black cost $1k.
Is there a standard, no-cost color? or has Tesla just raised the base price $1k?

It hasn't been implemented yet, but a "base white" will replace the base black. Different from pearl white; and presumably they'll replace the base black with a multi-coat obsidian black.

I’m going to bet against obsidian black.

In their production hell they were mixing and matching black/obsidian black bumpers and bodies.

Complete wreck.

The only motivation for basic white as standard is it helps them with costs. Front end, back end doesn’t matter.

Dollar saved is dollar earned.

The Pearl white is a multi coat process that takes longer to paint and costs more for materials.
This sounds like a way to reduce time in the paint shop, reduce costs for materials and speed up the production line.
Tesla is always looking for ways to speed up the process and reduce costs at the same time.
This is one more step to becoming profitable.

Of course, you could just opt for primer gray at no charge, and get it painted at MAACO or Earl Scheib in whatever color your heart desires, and it would probably last longer than Elon's paint job. My 2018 Honda CR-V is a gorgeous "white diamond pearl"

color, and it was a no-cost option.

Several post back I asked if opting for base primer is an option? Your post suggest that it is.
Does anyone else know that ordering base primer is a no-cost option?

I certainly would not take it to Earl Scheib ..... There is a quality pain specialist less than 40 miles from my home.

I've a 3 different black color car for the last ten years (including this model 3) and I've developed swirlofobia after I took delivery of this car.

I swear to god I will not have another black color car again (despite this, if you do paint correction/ceramic coating or whatever correctly with your black model 3 it will looks stunning, best color out there)

Pearl white: No thanks. Reminds me of Cadillacs and in some lights looks so pearlescent which is...not my thing. Also accentuates the panel gaps - especially the larger side trunk gap (large) versus bumper gap (small). White is the worst color for seeing those black/shadowed panel gaps. Chrome works with it, though.
This is great news. I have a solid white Model S because it was my favourite colour at time of purchase. Much crisper and more modern than the pearl white.
Man, you all are bumming my trip on the pearl white! I have a msm and picking up pearl white for my wife this week. Wish the pure white was already in production cause i'd rather have that for the cheaper easier paint repairs.

This is my first white car. In my opinion only some cars look good in white, and Model 3 is one. The reason is the design is very clean, frameless doors, minimal trim, and no reflectors anywhere other than the rear bumper. White contrasts with the black/tinted glass roof really well and also shows off the complete lack of grille better than any other color.

By far the best thing is it completely hides scratches/swirls. It’s unbelievable! I literally cannot see finger prints and such AT ALL. The downside is it does accentuate any panel gaps, so make sure the gaps you have are livable on a white car. Thankfully mine is pretty good.

I don’t agree at all that Tesla’s pearl white looks like an old person color. The Cadillac pearl white, for example, has an ugly yellowish tint. Tesla’s is an extremely pure white that to me looks much better.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a black car that’s not dirty. In a new car showroom you’ll see dust on it. I swear they are dirty as they are leaving the car wash. That color almost requires ceramic coating (at minimum) if you are the type that notices this stuff.
