Texas Supercharger Locations (location speculation, discussion)

I've always thought Denton would be a terrific location for a supercharger (see post #925 above), but to be honest, Gainesville would be more centrally located between Waco and OKC.

The Spencer Generating station only covers the general Denton area. It consists of two hydro stations on Lake Ray Roberts (1.2 MW) and Lake Lewisville (3 MW), plus the one with the charging station on Spencer Road in Denton (176 MW). I'm pretty sure it doesn't go up as far as Gainesville.

I looked through the city of Denton's building permits back to early July last night and didn't see anything with Tesla's name attached to it.

Please give us Baton Rouge before Thanksgiving. NOLA here we come! ;)

I'm pretty sure you'll need something else between Southlake and Baton Rouge....

I know Texarkana has been mentioned before but that's not really on the way from DFW to LA or FL. I think we're going to need Shreveport too. Actually, DFW to Shreveport is a bit of a haul (188 miles from Dallas to Shreveport according to Google Maps). So something in between... Tyler or Longview? I don't know that area well.

It's going to be a few years before Texas is as well connected as Southern California. The "ArkLaTex" area isn't even on the 2015 map.

Yeah, I know. I'm also hoping for another charger in Beaumont or Lake Charles, then I can take the long way via Huntsville and then down to I10 (or take a long break at an existing L2 charger in either town. Five hours at a McDonalds in Lake Charles doesn't sound all that bad, does it?). ;)

As for ArkLaTex, I think it's going to be a long wait. I was asked by someone at Tesla for recommended SC locations on the way to Little Rock and Atlanta, but I didn't get the impression that they were being anything but polite.

From the supercharger map it looks like the way from Dallas to Baton Rouge is to the expected supercharger in Lake Charles, LA and then connect to the I-10 route. but Huntsville to Lake Charles is 169 miles so that's going to be tight in a 60. Coming from Austin, the Columbus supercharger to Lake Charles doesn't work either, that's 215 miles. There will be a need for a supercharger on the east side of Houston, such as Baytown, for the I-10 route to work. Yuck.

Ugh.

Let's hope they get it done this year, so we can suffer through it together.

FYI, a better alternative in Lake Charles at present is L'auberge Casino & Hotel. If you have to sit around for 5 hours the casino resort is much better than a McDonalds!

L'auberge has a GE WattStation in their parking garage (J1772 208V 30A) that is free (it is listed on PlugShare). Here is my car getting a charge on my trip to Texas earlier this year:

Biggest risk here is that if it is in use you just have to wait.

FWIW, I'm continuing to monitor the building permits here in Amarillo for our expected supercharger. Here we are almost into September, no permits, and Amarillo is still on the 2014 map for superchargers. If we get Amarillo and Tucumcari launched, getting to Santa Fe will be much easier !!

As soon as I hear something, I'll post again.

That would be great. I would love to go to Carlsbad Caverns next year, and Tucumcari is just in range. If I can make the trip home via I10, so much the better.

I was really hoping for Beaumont but the math suggests the highway 62 interchange between Vidor and Orange. This would be 173-175 miles between Columbus and the rumored Baton Rouge SC.

I think that you are correct with Baton Rouge, but Tesla seems to be trying for around a 133 mile max distance between Superchargers for fast charging in all conditions for an 85 and reasonable driving for a 60. If you apply that constraint, then Lake Charles, LA is a more likely location for the next Supercharger on I-10, west of Baton Rouge. That is about 130 miles. Baton Rouge, LA to Lake Charles, LA - Google Maps

I think that Tesla will then probably put another Supercharger just on the east side of Houston for good spacing, maybe near the intersection with the Sam Houston Parkway, but that is only an intelligent guess.

More confirmation on the Baton Rouge location:

Then on to D'Iberville, MS (144 miles) maybe? There's a CBL mall there (The Promenade) -- in case that agreement is still bearing fruit.

Only problem being that you're then left with a 185 mile stretch to DeFuniak Springs... so maybe Pascagoula, with 166 mile legs on either side to Baton Rouge and DeFuniak.

I hope Tesla is ready for what's going to happen when they finally "uncork" the Texas loop...
