Thumb wheel stopped working. How to DIY replace the left scroll wheel and buttons

My left thumb volume scroll wheel went numb today and spins without "clicking". Does anyone have something similar happen? Tesla wants $275 to replace both left and right on my 2013 models S.

Due to the airbag, I would be really scared to pull the thing apart. Otherwise, I would unscrew the fascia (screws are on the back of the wheel) and see if something came loose.

The steering wheel is basically a Mercedes-Benz part, so check for buttons that way too.

Make sure to disconnect the 12v battery when working on anything with a airbag to avoid deployment.

Happened to me too about 4 months ago. However it was easier to schedule a service appointment, it's covered under warranty and will be as good as new in no time. It was no biggie for me, just make sure they pre-order the parts before you take it in, then it should be done in a jiffy.

This should be covered under the basic warranty, 4 yr or 50,000 miles.
