    Model S Snow Chains

I watched some videos of auto socks and visited their web site. Such a simple idea! They don't make it easy finding a retailer in NA but I'll go check amazon now... or maybe sew my own!!

But have you ever used them?

Model S: 2019.28.3.1 -- Web browser completely dead

Oh my God the fact you figured this out is amazing... I'll have to try on my car and see if it works for me.

Any plans for Model S Update?

Model years DO mean something to motor vehicle licensing and registration and the rest of the world. It's manufacture date on the sticker is the model year of your car, enjoy! All that stuff manufactured in 2016 for all the variants of model S that appeared ... are all model year 2016 cars...

    The "GOOD IDEAS" thread

There's a way to precondition the car by starting the charge again in the a.m. (leave it plugged in overnight) and also turn on heating to some comfortable setting. You have to do this when you wake up, there's no timer setting for doing this. What I've done is charge to 80% at bedtime. Wake...

    Model S Snow Chains

no but... be careful there is very little clearance around the front tires for chains of any kind before they start interfering / hitting suspension parts, namely the upper ball joint

    Headlights swapped!!

Since that post, I have upgraded my bulbs (before they burnt out) ... and whoa! ya! new bulbs make a difference. \ I bought a top name brand brightest bulb they make, keeping the original color and am super pleased with the result. I'd say, every 4 to 5 years do this job as maintenance...

Model S: 2019.28.3.1 -- Web browser completely dead

Farting around with show traffic on nav, seems to make no difference.. One day, the browser was working again with reasonable input/reaction and paint times. I thought, awesome! traffic off is the ticket! but... The next day, same old white screen of death. Traffic on or off. Didn't matter...

    Model S Software/Firmware wishlist

Tesla needs to open source the console UI code and hand the keys over to the world to do a better job. Clearly, they've given up.

Model S: 2019.28.3.1 -- Web browser completely dead

It's gotta be something consuming the CPU1 that's not leaving enough juice for the browser. Good tip on the traffic thing... I'll try anything to rejuve the browser to some usable degree, in times of need... you need it. I'll see if there's a correlation on my car between those two features...

    A little interior lighting mod

So cute how the ebay seller describes the whine: And the ad does not mention variability of the input power as a means for brightness control.

    A little interior lighting mod

I think the key piece of the retrofit was getting the software unlocked on the console.

    A little interior lighting mod

I'll stick an LED into the premium light harness in the door and see if/when/what conditions it comes on, and if there's any linkage to the dash (instrument and cluster LCD) illumination brightness. I imagine brightness is done in the car using PWM (as opposed to variable voltage) so your EL...

    Seat back (child kick) protectors

Just let the kids kick the back of the seat. The seats have back kicks on them already... that's what they're for. Wipe them down every once in a while.

Are the current (aug 2019) red paints the same for the S and 3?

Not a big fan of the red. Looks the same on both cars and that's why we didn't pick it for either. I hope Tesla changes it up a bit.. it's kinda of a dead red as it is. Mazda has an excellent red.
  18. scottm

    A little interior lighting mod

Yes, there are harnesses in the door for the premium lights. But how are these lights controlled? Is there software or something to do on the console to control them make them come on, dimness, etc.. or are they just "automatic" and do something on their own or in combination with other...

Model S: 2019.28.3.1 -- Web browser completely dead

The browser is pretty much a non-app in early cars now. There's a button for it.. but often does nothing... or if it does... loads so slowly and responds to input so slowly that it's useless. It used to be a decent feature in it's day. The problem with Tesla is not durability of the electric...

With the influx of model 3 i see SC stations over run!!

If they've labeled the pedestals correctly, then... 1A and 1B are electrically joined to charger #1, which can deliver only so much divided between these two cars. 1A and 2A are not joined, they are sourced from different chargers so each car gets full dose. Generally, you pull up to an...

Should EVs Make Artificial Sounds at Low Speeds?

An Audi R8 or something like that was passing me on the right yesterday (I was slowing to turn left) and he lifted off throttle as he drove by and that engine exhaust cracked and puked so loud it made me jump out of my skin. And I'm not easily frightened by noises... it was like a gunshots. I...

    If Taycan so can we!

Not a shame, eco long haul is way more important than sport and having a halo car. IMHO. And there's a couple companies beating Tesla at E-semi's already.

Should EVs Make Artificial Sounds at Low Speeds?

Talk about EV noises... the squeal of golf carts in reverse is grating on the nerves. Early in the morning... the noise penetrates walls of the lodge where we're sleeping Screeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!! They don't even pulse just a constant grating sound until the flipping driver decides to put it in...

    Driveshaft clicking ok?

I have not. Vacation got in the way. (We took the 3 instead of the S and man that's nice to fast charge, does it in about half the time). But when I do the job, I'll post a few pix to show what's up for others who want to try.
  28. scottm

    If Taycan so can we!

Tesla has their own special chargers everywhere... called Superchargers. And nobody controls the weather. I don't get your points?

With the influx of model 3 i see SC stations over run!!

..the guy from Washington up in Alberta with his S parked in a SC spot and not being plugged in at all. Nowhere to be seen around the chargers. Just sayin'
  30. scottm

With the influx of model 3 i see SC stations over run!!

Model 3's are in and out so fast, you won't know how many came while your S was doing its thing and you shopped the mall. We just took the 3 on road trip... what a nice difference waiting 25 minutes at a stop instead of an hour.

Adjacent cars jump around in display

Tesla really needs to do some motion smoothing of objects, and filter out physically impossible movement, like spinning cars. You know, basic UI stuff. They don't put much effort into the simple stuff.
  32. scottm

With the influx of model 3 i see SC stations over run!!

Maybe some cars park there without pushing the charge connector all the way in to look like they're charging, but not really, so they have a convenient parking spot and won't incur idle fees. Do everyone a favour at unattended cars at SC and make sure the plugs are fully inserted. And if they...

Not able to charge at super charging stations.

Your thing is toast, which fried your other thing, so it must be something in the you know, car part of it. You have exactly the charge remaining in your battery to get that car to a repair place. But by now you've had a tow and this has been fixed. Report back on the damage and parts list please.

    Tesla Service

It's regionally good or bad. You don't care about service being generally good. You care about service near Baltimore. Tune into that. Every service I've had has always delighted me, they go above and beyond expectations. Five years running. Just excellent!
  35. scottm

    Tesla Service

This sounds like you crashed a car, which is not a service issue, its a driver issue.
  36. scottm

    Supercharging issue...

Clean your charge port contacts they are filthy. Also, now you have just jumped the 16.x firmware bridge, so your car may experience a sudden drop in range.

Rejected 4 cars, was told they would not request more cars for me

Bob Lutz was really hung up on gaps, for a while when he was heavily bashing the Tesla brand, but even he has come around lately and said gaps are fine.

    Supercharger pre-warming whine

We did a navigate to nearest SC, and when we got closer to it, the car pops up the notice that battery warming is happening. I put the energy consumption graph up and verified, yup, that's a lot of juice going in to heating the battery. As it did this, both myself and my wife could hear a...

    Failed to go into reverse.

Maybe get your driver's seat occupant sensor looked at. Also, is your key being detected reliably all the time? Maybe change the battery if it's been a while. Either would prevent shifting into any gear.

Few seconds to pull a SIM? Not on my model S. I know where it is... and going to have to spend a lot more time than that.

    Tesla Website Redesign

Correct. You'd be winning the ESA game in that case. @TIppy did all that happen to your 13, 16, or 19 model S? And if you're buying cars at this frequency, trading in for newer... why would you ever ESA? You get a new warranty on each one. If you're a high miler and warranty is expiring...

Rejected 4 cars, was told they would not request more cars for me

At least the robots are building them consistently. If it were me, I'd open the lid give a good shove to see if I could shift 2mm of gap from one side to the other.
  46. scottm

    Tesla Website Redesign

Yes necessarily, that's how insurance works. An MCU is half an ESA, better to pay for it straight up.
  47. scottm

    Tesla Website Redesign

ESA would have been a waste of money for me. They are on average not worth it.

Model S gone in less than 60 seconds

They are not cloning they are relaying. They can't inject a fob press into the radio stream.
  49. scottm

Model S gone in less than 60 seconds

Touch handle doesn't do anything if you have turned off walk-up unlocking.
  50. scottm

Model S gone in less than 60 seconds

Not only PIN to drive, but you can also turn OFF walk-up unlocking. That alone would prevent this type of theft. So there's two layers of defense you can add. Turn them both on and that pretty much guarantees your car is going nowhere without you.
