The lack of communication, and the amount of conflicting information, has shaken any trust I had with buying used.
If you can cope with the uncertainty of "When" (and quite possibly "where") I'd stick with it - for the warranty aspects - EV stuff is all a bit new for conventional "Just buy one privately" for most people. Pretty much everyone (
bar some unfortunate exceptions where Tesla has handed over a car which has had no checking, no valeting, nothing) is happy with the result. But the bit between "I want one" and "I've got one" can be horrendous. Thereafter you are very likely to be happy (
with the notable exceptions, which I hope you are already aware of, of Wipers, USS and phantom braking when using AP (which does not seem to affect everyone's cars)
This sounds to me like Tesla have still not got the back-office systems in place for their recent broader expansion into 2nd hand vehicles. Tesla have plenty of history of "Let's get into X" and then it being years (literally) before they have half decent systems in place to support the move. They rely on staff-heroics in the interval, and the knowledge of Person-A vs. Person-B is variable - as you have found out! Plus there are huge numbers of stories of support / sales staff who have just made stuff up. I have no idea why. "
I don't know" or "
I will find out" seem a perfectly valid answer to me, whereas "
Here's some complete bull I made up" is very annoying when you find out that that is, indeed, what it is
How large is the risk buying a Tesla from a dealer - I'm guessing they don't do tests as throughly as Tesla do
There is plenty of discussion on here about how little maintenance EVs need ... but a reason for getting rid of one would be if it is a Lemon, and it would be hard to know that for you (a newbie) and the dealer too quite possibly (for same reason, at this point in time). There are some EV specialists, but other than that I, personally, would be cautious - but if the car still has plenty of manufacturer's warranty then I guess buying it anywhere would be fine, and if its from a 3rd party dealer and if it turns out to be a Lemon, I guess you'd have comeback with the dealer.
What are the chances we'll find a decent M3 2020 with this spec elsewhere?
tesla-info.com aggregates sales adverts from all over the place, and has good filters to match available cars with your requirements, so is a good source of what is currently being advertised
Do we actually know if Tesla do any tests on used cars? Most manufactures claim a 5000point test on approved used vehicles.
Do Tesla even claim that?
Their software must know the answer to quite a lot of those, potential, questions. When I phoned to check if one of my fuses might have failed after a bit of tap-tap-tap on his keyboard the support person said "No Sir, all your fuses are fine"
