Using Data in Mexico

Hi - has anybody gone south of the border in their Tesla yet? I live in San Diego, and often visit Baja. Yesterday I realized there's no data in Baja. Called Tesla and said they don't offer any possibilities for this. Does anybody have any way to get around this?

I go south of the border many times and actually planning to go to Ensenada this weekend.

There is no way in hell would I bring my Tesla across. Don't want to be targeted as well as having *sugar* loads of people wanting to touch it since you'll be the novelty.

Would anybody bring a car that is worth more than 100K across into TJ or parts of like?

Elon knows you shouldn't take your Tesla to Mexico. Why would you even consider such a thing? Now to answer your question - use your phone as a hotspot and connect to wifi through the car. If you have enough money to burn a Tesla in the desert then you have plenty to cover the roaming charges.

Please stick to constructive comments. It's pretty common to bring high-end cars here, especially if you have Sentri. I know that there are a lot of affluent TJ residents that want to own a Tesla, they just need it a little localized. Looking to see if anybody has figured anything out a little more permanent.

If you have a cell phone with data coverage you can tether the car to your phone over Wifi.

Use a mobile hotspot with a Mexican pre-paid sim card. If you want streaming (USA IP), add a portable Butterfly VPN.

Actually AT&T and Verizon have free roaming in Mexico now. I used my AT&T phone in Cozumel Mexico last month and it worked perfectly.

So you can use your phone as a 'hot spot' for your car.

Back in 2013 Tesla said taking the car into Mexico voids the warranty on the car. Is that still their policy or has it changed?

Additionally, my automobile insurance policy contains a rider that excludes coverage in Mexico.

Doesn't Tesla have Superchargers in México? If so, don't they use data to talk back to the mothership?

Tesla just opened the Ensenada supercharger. Drove here now and it’s been great. The only person who asked about my car was the Airbnb host. No problems otherwise.

I have an office in Guadalajara and Tesla has a Supercharger opening there "this year" according to their map. They wouldn't be investing in so many Mexico superchargers is there was no support for Mexico. I don't drive my Model S to Mexico when I'm at that office but I'd expect the AT&T SIM in my car to work if I did.

For reference, I did the phone hotspot to the car and it worked just fine. Even downloaded the latest update.
