VW Fallout: $2.0 Billion for ZEV Infrastructure Buildout

Hi Pollux
Did you see the details of the cheat ?

The emissions controls (or at least some of them) are turned off below 10C or above 28C. I can sort of understand the diesel engine performing poorly when cold but I'm stumped by > 28C.

Anyway, this was VW trying to avoid the costs of a buy-back. It is going to be a lot harder for them to evade now, and they get to add the costs of the initial software 'fix' and fines for the additional evasion on top. Next question: who is going to be the fall guy for this latest round of fraud ? Another rogue 'low level engineer' ?

The cheating range is below 10C and above 32C... details from the article below. Truely reprehensible behavior by VW.

According to the findings of the Düsseldorf district court, Volkswagen’s Dieselgate software fix was intended to ensure that the emissions of vehicles affected by the scandal were appropriately controlled. Unfortunately, it turned out that the exhaust gas cleaning system in the update only worked at outside temperatures between 10-32 degrees Celsius. In the event that the weather falls below or above this range, the cleaning remains disabled, allowing the affected vehicles to overly-pollute as before.

As part of its public education campaign, Electrify America rolls out it's "Normal Now" EV education website. I like the idea, not sure how it will be linked to unless maybe they pay Google to run ads for the site when someone searches for anything EV related.

They have a couple 15 second commercials, links to the commercials are toward the bottom. Funny stuff.

Normal Now

9 of the top 10 cars based on range are Teslas... ;)

Normal Now

Now I'm more sure than ever.
The way to "sell" Teslas is by owners and test drives.
IF (when?) Tesla needs to stimulate sales, I'd suggest rentals of Teslas.
FSD might just remove the need to "sell Tesla cars"

The last of 4 $200 million tranches for California is being rolled out soon. See this link.

They are upgrading some site to use their Gen 4 chargers, and the single CCS connector is compatible with "most" EVs ;)

They do plan on adding NACS cables though (Yay):

And highlights of the prior 3 plans:

Appendix C of the 2.0L VW Partial Consent Decree (Consent Decree) requires VW to remedy the negative impact that sales of its 2.0L diesel vehicles had on California’s ZEV market. This ZEV Investment Commitment requires VW to invest $800 million in California in four $200 million, 30-month cycles over a 10-year period to support the increased use and availability of ZEVs.

CARB approved Electrify America’s Cycle 1 ZEV Investment Plan (Cycle 1 Plan) at a public meeting on July 27, 2017, the Cycle 2 ZEV Investment Plan (Cycle 2 Plan) at a public meeting on December 14, 2018, and the Cycle 3 ZEV Investment Plan (Cycle 3 Plan) at a public meeting on June 24, 2021.

The Cycle 1 Plan provided: (1) $120 million for charging infrastructure along highway corridors and in the communities of the Fresno, Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Francisco, San Diego, and San Jose metropolitan areas; (2) $44 million for Green City initiatives; and (3) $20 million for ZEV Awareness activities.

The Cycle 2 Plan provided: (1) $153 million for charging infrastructure along highway corridors and in the communities of the Fresno, Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Francisco, San Diego, San Jose, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, and Riverside; (2) $10 million for Electrify America’s efforts to drive station utilization through marketing; and (3) $17 million for ZEV Awareness activities.

The Cycle 3 Plan provided: (1) $127 million for charging infrastructure along highway corridors and in the metropolitan areas of Fresno, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, San Jose, Riverside, Oxnard, Stockton, Santa Barbara, Bakersfield, and Visalia; (2) $28 million for education, awareness, access and marketing activities; and (3) $25 million for Electrify America’s second Green City.

I think we can all agree that EA has contributed the most to the enshittification of EV charging. VW deserves to die.
