Wheel dip

I hate washing my car. I hate washing the wheels even more given how bad the Tesla dust. When I first got the car, I knew I had to dip it black so I don’t have to worry about the dust. Unfortunately the dust is so bad that it is doing quite a bit of cosmetic to the dip. Right when I was about to redo it, Dyc came out with a new color and that’s what it looks like

That’s a lotta dust.
Dust is entirely dependent upon pad material. OEMs, especially German ones, typically use a dustier pad as they tend to have better feel and bite. However, a low dust pad stops just as well and will make a WOLRD of difference.

Do you have regen enabled? I noticed my Model 3’s wheels stay pristine for FAR longer than any of my prior cars. I can go entire trips without pressing the brake once. If you don’t use the brakes, dusting is impossible.

How long did the dip last before you started noticing the cosmetic damage ? Did you find it easier to apply the dip with the wheels off of the car ?

The wheels faded pretty bad starting at like 5000 miles. I have 15000 miles on the car, I washed my wheels once or twice. You can see how bad it is now. I currently have 16K miles. Let me grab a better shot, it's hard to snap pictures when the garage is full

Thanks ! I bought the Brass Monkey wheel kit from DYC but haven't started dipping the wheels yet. It's been cold in the garage and I was waiting for it to warm up a bit before I started. Any tips ?

4 light coats on each spoke while turning wheel to maintain consistent coverage. i do each spoke from above, under, then right in the middle. then a final coat to blend it in. same with the outer circle. inner 3rd, outer 3rd, middle 3rd. then a final spray over everything.

dust will easily coat the dip because it's rubberized. i use 2 coats of gloss coat to give it a light sheen while making it slick enough to wash dust off easily

try to spray light and even from a foot away otherwise you will get pooling and dripping. usually 10-20 minutes between coats was enough for me.

i did mine while it was on the car. just put a plastic bag over the rotors/brakes.

I would say do it in warmer weather and try to do it outside if it is not windy or dusty as the drying part can take a while. While I like the coverage of the original dip, but the texture on them is very rubbery and frankly it attracts a lot of dirt. The new dip has much better texture, as you can see in the picture. Yet the coverage on them is rather poor, I had a tough time getting an even coat all over. Here are some pictures. The LR is less dirty because it only has 2000 miles on it

What happens with the gold ? I bought the "Brass Monkey" color, which is a dark brass.

It looks super ghetto, I tried to do the WRX gold wheel on a X. It didn't come out well. I had also tried the metallic to make it shiny, but I much prefer the matte black look. The only problem is the dust will overcome it and make it super dull. As of this moment, the new color is looking great. I might pop it on the car.

I drive our X the same way I drive our 3: rely on regen as much as possible since most of the time it’s freeway driven. Between the 2, the X generates way more dust than our 3 and the X isn’t a performance model either whereas the 3 is. This is all anecdotal but there’s way more effort to clean the 22’s on the X then the 20’s on the 3 during the same intervals between car washes.
