When are VIN Numbers assigned?

I called the customer service number as I was trying to switch around payment method after I received my VIN. I had not heard back from my SA in 2 days, so just decided to call and promptly got someone on the phone. After I got my issue resolved, I decided to ask what the manufacture date of the vehicle was. I have a 418 VIN and he stated April 26. I just went with it, but thought it was very odd. Is this possible? As far as I am aware 418 and 419 VINs are the ones getting assigned now. Is it possible to have a new VIN assigned to a car that has been just sitting on the lot? I was thinking he meant September 26.

What is the next number following PF418? Just basing off some VINs in the VIN tracker Google spreadsheet, if it's in PF4189, that's more likely a late Sept to early Oct build.

I would see if I could get someone else again to verify the build date again. I think that's a big difference between April and Sept/Oct where there might be some hardware differences.

I agree. I don't know why a random car from April would be assigned a newer VIN without it being a demo car. Don't VINs get stamped on vehicles during the build process?

That's my understanding. Once a build gets a VIN, I would imagine it would be illegal to change it. Or at the very least pretty involved process for consumer protection.
